Born in Barcelona in 1973, Mireia Serra's lifelong passion for sculpting was temporarily diverted by her parents' persuasion to pursue a career in fashion design. However, in 1998, she abandoned a lucrative role as a lingerie designer to follow her artistic calling and seek true fulfillment within the realm of fine arts. It was a transformative decision, allowing her to rediscover her true purpose and embark on a creative odyssey that continues to unfold to this day. In some of her present sculptures, the presence of elements from the fashion world such as cameras, texture, and detailed finishing of the clothes, and shoes are apparent. She graduated in 2002 from the Llotja School of Arts in Barcelona (the same school that took under its wing Antoni Gaudí, Pablo Picasso, and Joan Miró), specializing in iron and bronze. Later she took an advanced sculpture portrait course taught by sculptor Jorge Egea at MEAM (Museo European d'Art Modern) in order to master her technique. Working as a full-time sculptor since 2003, Serra started to exhibit with galleries throughout Spain and landed her first solo shows and her first international art fair in Madrid in 2013. Her works have been represented by Artspace Warehouse since 2017. Pietro Bazzanti - Barzanti (Italian, 1825-1895) "After the Bath" - A very Fine and large carved white Carrara marble figure of a semi-nude young maiden standing by the sea-shore. The smiling and posing young beauty, with bare breasts and back, her right arm juxtaposed over her head, while holding a blanket over her waist with her left hand and standing barefoot by a rocky seawall and wavy shoreline. Signed 'P. Barzanti/Florence' (on reverse) and raised on a cylindrical swiveling carved verde antico solid marble pedestal. circa: Florence, 1880-1890. Pietro Bazzanti or Barzanti (Italian, 1825-1895) was a 19th Century Italian sculptor born in Florence. Together with his brother, Niccolò Bazzanti (Firenze, 1802-1869) who was also a sculptor, they both worked the sprawling Florentine studio 'Pietro Bazzanti e Figlio' a hugely successful sculpture studio, operated within the family at their gallery on Lungarno Corsini until the mid-twentieth century. The studio was a place where many talented professors and apprentice sculptors specialized in sculpting marble genre scenes and allegorical figures as well as copies of antique and Renaissance sculpture catered to a prominent international clientele which included European and Russian aristocracy, and the Industrial fortunes being made in England and Americas drove considerable export demand. In 1861 the studio was awarded the medal for 'Ercole con cinghiale sulla spalla' (Hercules with boar on shoulder), 'Due Cani' (Two dogs) and 'Cinghiale' (Boar) sculptures at the National Exposition in Florence. In 1874 he exhibits his works in London and in 1876 in Philadelphia. Bazzanti frequently returned to the subject of 'After the Bath' or 'The Bather' in his works, having carved examples of the bathing Venus after the Antique and in dynamic and dramatic compositions such as the present sculpture. The finely-detailed work relates closely to popular figures produced by Bazzanti’s contemporary, Cesar Lapini, whose La Sopresa depicts a young woman stepping back from approaching waves. The sculptor’s penchant for realism is on full display with the contrasting matte and highly-polished finishes of the gently lapping waves at the figure’s feet, to the jutting rocks and soft skin. Elegant handling of textures is further exemplified in the draped fringe of the cloth. This monumental and Fine work is illustrated in situ at Bazzanti’s studio circa 1900 among other fashionable works of the period. Notes: Pietro Bazzanti was also known as Pietro Barzanti. There are conflicting dates of Pietro Bazzanti/Barzanti's birth/death year. Some auction houses and art galleries have described 'Pietro Barzanti' as Italian, 1842–1881 and Pietro Bazzanti as Italian, 1825-1895. However, according to Alfonso Panzetta – Nuovo Dizionario degli Scultori Italiani dell’ottocento e del Primo Novecento – 2003 Edition –Page 78, 'Pietro Barzanti' was in fact 'Pietro Bazzanti' one and the same, and it questions his year of his birth/death as "Firenze (?), ?, ?." thus we believe that the Italian, 1825-1895 description is the most plausible. William King (1925-2015). Reclining figure, ca. 1965. Cast and welded bronze, 7 x 9.5 x 5 inches. Unsigned. William King, a sculptor in a variety of materials whose human figures traced social attitudes through the last half of the 20th century, often poking sly and poignant fun at human follies and foibles, died on March 4 at his home in East Hampton, N.Y. He was 90. His death was confirmed by Scott Chaskey, who is married to Mr. King's stepdaughter, Megan Chaskey. Mr. King worked in clay, wood, bronze, vinyl, burlap and aluminum. He worked both big and small, from busts and toylike figures to large public art pieces depicting familiar human poses -- a seated, cross-legged man reading; a Western couple (he in a cowboy hat, she in a long dress) holding hands; a tall man reaching down to tug along a recalcitrant little boy; a crowd of robotic-looking men walking in lock step. But for all its variation, what unified his work was a wry observer's arched eyebrow, the pointed humor and witty rue of a fatalist. His figurative sculptures, often with long, spidery legs and an outlandishly skewed ratio of torso to appendages, use gestures and posture to suggest attitude and illustrate his own amusement with the unwieldiness of human physical equipment. His subjects included tennis players and gymnasts, dancers and musicians, and he managed to show appreciation of their physical gifts and comic delight at their contortions and costumery. His suit-wearing businessmen often appeared haughty or pompous; his other men could seem timid or perplexed or awkward. Oddly, or perhaps tellingly, he tended to depict women more reverentially, though in his portrayals of couples the fragility and tender comedy inherent in couplehood settled equally on both partners. Mr. King's work is in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, among other places, and he had dozens of solo gallery shows in New York and elsewhere. But the comic element of his work probably caused his reputation to suffer. Reviews of his exhibitions frequently began with the caveat that even though the work was funny, it was also serious, displaying superior technical skills, imaginative vision and the bolstering weight of a range of influences, from the ancient Etruscans to American folk art to 20th-century artists including Giacometti, Calder. and Elie Nadelman. The critic Hilton Kramer, one of Mr. King's most ardent advocates, wrote in a 1970 essay accompanying a New York gallery exhibit that he was, "among other things, an amusing artist, and nowadays this can, at times, be almost as much a liability as an asset." A "preoccupation with gesture is the focus of King's sculptural imagination," Mr. Kramer wrote. "Everything that one admires in his work - the virtuoso carving, the deft handling of a wide variety of materials, the shrewd observation and resourceful invention - all this is secondary to the concentration on gesture. The physical stance of the human animal as it negotiates the social arena, the unconscious gait that the body assumes in making its way in the social medium, the emotion traced by the course of a limb, a torso, a head, the features of a face, a coiffure or a costume - from a keen observation of these materials King has garnered a large stock of sculptural images notable for their wit, empathy, simplicity and psychological precision." Made from a real pizza nestled in its original box opened using high-chromium stainless steel, the piece measures 16" x 16" x 21", weighs approximately 80 pounds and is an Artist Proof. The artist sees his creation as a reflection of the cultural distortions represented by memes, a statement he has expressed perfectly in his reflective, yet unevenly textured, medium. "You look at your reflection [in the piece], and it's distorted in the stainless steel." The piece was born in 2007, just as the social internet was beginning to explode out of the digital back rooms and onto the world stage under the watchful eyes of Myspace, Facebook, YouTube, Reddit, Twitter, Tumblr, and other popular platforms. But Big Sausage Pizza was conceived well before that, in the Wild West days of the internet when few truly public forums existed and media of every kind was most commonly shared via email. In those days one never knew what to expect from a link or an attachment and each click had equal odds of either brightening your day with a dancing baby or posing a risk to your computer, your dignity, or your relationships... and that was half the fun. Every recipient of these images, videos, or audio files suddenly had the means not only to pass them along to as many people as they pleased, but to change and individualize them before sending them on. In this way, the media very quickly mutated and were distributed around the globe. In other words, they became true memes. Pizza has evolved in much the same way. Like the internet, it started as an artifact of a specific culture, but today both are so common throughout the world that most of us can barely remember a time when they were special and exotic. Just as the internet simply IS, pizza also simply IS. We used to make pizza at home, or at least buy it in a place where they were handmade and offered a limited list of toppings. Today, the meme that is pizza is brought to our tables by an almost entirely mechanized process, and it's so wildly mutated that each individual has the ability to create a new twist on the old...
