David Bates British, (1840-1921)
David Bates was born in March, Cambridge in 1840 to Benjamin Bates a shoe maker and Sarah Bates. By 1851, the family had moved to Upton upon Severn in Worcestershire and from 1855 Bates became an apprentice at the Royal Worcester Porcelain Works in Worcester. There he developed his artistic talent, painting flower decorations onto vases and plates. At some point after 1861, he became a full time artist and made his debut at the Royal Academy in 1863, continuing to exhibit there until 1893. He also exhibited at the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists, Suffolk Street and the Grosvenor Gallery. He married Elizabeth Higgs from Worcester in 1867 and they lived at Cherry Orchard, Bath Road in Worcester where their children were later born. Michael Patterson was born in Hudson, NY in 1953 into a family of painters. Howard Ashman Patterson, his grandfather, was an established American painter. Michael graduated from Suny Purchase with honors in painting, printmaking, and sculpture. He has been painting for thirty-five years or so, doing extensive traveling for inspiration.
Michael focuses on light, reflected light and its color effects, as well as the positive and negative shapes of equal importance, create the graphic energy of my compositions. This sets the rhythm for a piece and influences where the viewer’s eye travels and at what pace.
He includes curved lines with straight, organic shapes juxtaposed geometric shapes woven together, always conscious of the line created by any color masses converging. This line flows throughout, interrupted, yet continuous. The subject of his work most always includes the human figure wherever they may be- city streets, markets, the beach, alone or in groups. People are the most interesting part of creation.
His travels include Vermont, Maine, California, New Mexico, Hawaii, Costa Rica, Ecuador, and Europe. He lived in France for several years. Michael has shown his work in Europe and the U.S., primarily in the Northeast.

Byron Browne: American (1907-1961)
Byron Browne was a leader of the American Avante Garde art movement in the 1930’s and 40’s along with Bolotowsky, Greene, Gorky, and de Kooning. These artists helped pave the way for America, New York in particular, to be seen as a center for art innovation after decades of France being the art center of the world. He had more than 70 solo exhibitions during his lifetime.
Browne's early artistic training was conventional, and little about his time at the National Academy of Design (1924-1928) suggested he would depart from the traditional methods in which he was being schooled. Benjamin Albert Stahl (September 7, 1910 – October 19, 1987) was an American artist, illustrator and author. He showed precocious talent, winning a scholarship to the Art Institute of Chicago at age twelve. His artwork appeared in the International Watercolor Show at the Art Institute when he was sixteen. He later taught at the Art Institute, as well as at the American Academy of Art, the Art Students League of New York, Brooklyn's Pratt Institute and at various universities.
Stahl won many prizes, including the Saltus Gold Medal of the National Academy of Design. His work appeared in Women's Home Companion, Cosmopolitan, American Artist, North Light, Esquire, the Chicago Tribune Magazine, Picture Post, Southwest Art and in some 750 stories in The Saturday Evening Post. He was featured in the 1976 television series Journey into Art with Ben Stahl, 26 half-hour programs consisting of lectures and painting demonstrations by the artist. A student of Dutch marine artist, Mauritz de Haas, Warren Sheppard built two successful careers around his love of the sea: marine painting and yacht designing. He was born in Greenwich, New Jersey, a town on the Delaware River below Philadelphia, which has been associated with ships and shipping since the earliest Colonial times. His father was a sea captain and the young Sheppard took many voyages with his father to make artistic studies. He learned perspective drawing at Cooper Union in New York City in addition to his studies with de Haas. In 1879, he spent four months sketching Mediterranean port cities including Gibraltar, Genoa, Naples and Messina in Sicily. Between 1888 and 1893, he also studied painting in Venice and Paris. By the time he was in his mid-thirties, he had established himself as a successful illustrator and painter. The yachts he painted were the most lavish of his day, owned by the wealthiest of men. He was an expert in the design and rigging of ships of present and earlier times. His work was highly regarded for its authenticity as well as its artistic merit.Sheppard was also an expert navigator and sailed a number of famous yachts in races.
