If you are looking for a large crucifix with a not too overwhelming corpus of Christ for your house of prayer or for your home(chapel) then this unique ecclesiastical antique from the late 1800s could be the one. According to the former owner, this ancient bronze-color painted and sizable corpus and cross came from a monastery in Germany. The details in the anatomy of this Christ sculpture are very well carved and they clearly reveil the work of a seasoned carver / sculptor. We were also immediately impressed by the coloring, because the patina on this corpus from a little distance very much resembles the patina of antique bronze sculptures that you can find in every major market square here in Europe. We also particularly appreciate the details in the face and the position of the head of Christ. Both the angle in which He bowes His head and the details in His face are very realistic and they leave a lasting impression. We believe the artist has perfectly captured the moment in which Jesus bowed His head as He died on the cross. The ebonized oak cross is original to this corpus, but we think it was ebonized later in time, because it makes this unique and stunning sculpture stand out better. This solid oak cross has metal-strengthened openings in the back (both atop and at the bottom) via which this crucifix is safe and easy to mount. Because of the quality, the rarity, the large size, the beauty and the deeper meaning we are convinced that this antique crucifix too will find a new home soon. Whether it be in a private home, monastery or in a church, this work of religious art from the late 1800's will never fail to impress. Presented is a first edition printing of The Memoirs of General W. T. Sherman. This two volume book set was published by D. Appleton and Company, in New York, in 1875. It is presented here, rebound in striking quarter blue leather and cloth boards, with raised bands, gilt tooling, and gilt titles to the spine, new marbled endpapers, and a custom archival cloth slipcase to fit both books.
Ten years after the end of the Civil War, Sherman became the first General to publish his memoirs of that period. He began writing his account in 1872 and the two volumes were published by D. Appleton and Company in the spring of 1875. According to the publisher’s prospectus, the two volume set was originally offered in four different bindings, including fine blue cloth, green cloth, full sheepskin, and half blue moroccan leath.
Sherman explains his motivations for writing in the preface of Volume I: “Nearly ten years have passed since the close of the civil war in America, and yet no satisfactory history thereof is accessible to the public;…. What is now offered is not designed as a history of the war, or even as a complete account of all the incidents in which the writer bore a part, but merely his recollection of events, corrected by a reference to his own memoranda, which may assist the future historian when he comes to describe the whole, and account for the motives and reasons which influenced some of the actors in the grand drama of war.”
His two volume account touches briefly on his early life, including his time at West Point, his life in and out of the army in Florida, California, New York, Kansas, and Louisiana. Yet the bulk of the writing is focused on the Civil War. “Written with the propulsive energy and intelligence that marked his campaigns” his memoir provides firsthand accounts of Shiloh, Vicksburg, Chattanooga, the infamous Atlanta campaign, and his march to the sea through Georgia and the Carolinas.
The memoir describes striking incidents and anecdotes and collects dozens of his incisive and often outspoken wartime orders and reports. Throughout it all, Sherman is quite frank in describing the rights and wrongs of the campaigns he saw, writing without much concern for the feelings or experiences of others. This complex self-portrait of an innovative and relentless American general provides for a vivid read and an exceptional Civil War account.

If you are a collector of truly unique antiques in general and of cigar or carriage related pieces in particular then this one of a kind centerpiece could be flying your way soon. Over the years we have sold a few antique novelty cigar holders, but never one of this size and never in the form of a carriage. Back in the day when this type of carriages were the means of transportation for only the wealthiest of western societies, smoking cigars certainly was a manly thing to do and very much 'en vogue'. Smoking cigars also proved that you had made it in this world. For all those reasons, this hand-crafted carriage cigar holder has always been and always will be a statement piece. We, as antique enthousiast, first and foremost fell in love with the workmanship and with the honest and timeless way in which this carriage was hand-crafted. We also love how perfectly balanced and realistic it is and for us to have been given the opportunity to buy yet another unique antique and in such amazing condition again felt like a blessing. The former owner, in our view, had gone a little overboard in trying to be the best custodian, because he kept this unique antique in an aquarium-like glass dome. He certainly succeeded, because this carriage cigar holder is in THE best possible condition.
