Although renowned for his innovative and groundbreaking sculptures, Alexander Calder started his artistic career as an abstract painter, preferring to use gouache. What is gouache? Gouache is a water-soluble paint – a type of opaque watercolor.
As Calder returned to gouache painting towards the end of his life, he was now armed with a lifetime of experience as a sculptor. He explored the three-dimensional vocabulary of sculptural forms he had developed onto the two-dimensional surface of the paper. Certain shapes and colors recur throughout his gouaches and sculptures. Circles, ovals, and other geometric forms dominate the space. There is the same sense of energy and fluidity. The shapes do not sit on the surface but vibrate giving a feeling of movement in contrast to the static nature of painting.

David Edward Byrd created some of the most memorable Classic Theatre and Rock and Roll images from the 1960s and 70s. David created ALL of the Art for Bill Graham’s Fillmore East, including their Program covers and Rock posters, the art for Jimi Hendrix’s first Fillmore East appearance, The Rolling Stones 1969 World Tour art, The Who’s Performance of Tommy at the New York Metropolitan Opera House and The Fillmore, and The Grateful Dead Swell Dance Concert to name only a few where all created by David Edward Byrd. He also created the poster art for the original location of the 1969 Woodstock music festival . His memorable images were also used for classic Broadway shows like Godspell, Follies and Jesus Christ Superstar to mention only a few. 'Barge on the River Seine', watercolour on paper, by Roland DuBuc (circa 1970s). The broad Parisian river Seine divides Paris into the left and right banks. This particular scene appears to be well down river beyond the city as the greenery along the banks points to. The Seine’s collection of lovely small towns happily graces its banks and proudly conveys French culture. Of course, the best way to experience all of these towns and villages is on a river cruise. The Seine is second only to the Loire River which is France's longest. It rises 18 miles (30 kilometres) northwest of Dijon and flows in a northwesterly direction through Paris before emptying into the English Channel at Le Havre. The artist Dubuc created many artworks with the Seine as backdrop. You can have this one right in your living room. In good overall condition, the piece is newly framed and glazed with anti-reflective glass. It is signed by the artist in the lower left hand. Upon request a video of the painting may be provided.
About the Artist: Roland DuBuc (1924-1998), French artist, the sixth of 13 children and son of a construction worker. The very precariousness of the family's financial situation forced him to go to work at the age of 14. In extreme poverty, he moved to Rouen where he was lodged by the Salvation Army. During that time he struck up friendships with several artists who gave him advice and taught him techniques of drawing. In 1975, The New York Times commissioned Superstar artist David Byrd to create the "Manhattan Coloring Book" It was to be a coloring book for adults (That they really weren't going to color in as the drawings were very detailed.) I have included a photo in this listing of the cover of the original 1975 coloring book just as a reference it is not included in the sale. The book was to be a collectors item and a tribute to the city of New York. It sold out rather quickly and the 1975 first edition did indeed become a collectors item. It featured the most important architectural structures in New York City. We are please to offer for sale one of the original 1975 drawings by Mr. Byrd that was used in that collectible book. This drawing is of the McGraw-Hill building on West 42Street..
