Gracias Madre Newport Beach

Restaurant by Wendy Haworth Studio in Newport Beach, CA

We were influenced by Mexican design and craft for the palette and textures within the space. The West Hollywood restaurant has a very definitive black and white palette with a mix of bright jewel-tone colors. We wanted a continuation of this palette in Newport so it would feel familiar but also gave it a unique palette. We covered the ceiling in matting woven from palm and retiled the bar face with colorful terracotta zellige tiles in a vibrant pattern. The custom iron pendants over the bar are the same as the ones we did in West Hollywood. We added booths in the middle of the space with embroidered textiles by Kettlewell Collection. The banquettes around the perimeter of the room are in Zak + Fox’s Mazan fabric. Scott Shrader designed the patio hardscape and plantings, using a flamed basalt in a herringbone pattern and a bamboo canopy above. The rattan pendants are from Inner Gardens and the striped banquette cushions from Holly Hunt.
