Signed lower left "Kvapil" Charles Kvapil was born in Czechoslovakia on November 1, 1884, and died in Paris in 1957. He takes courses at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp. His first works are exhibited in 1908, at the Salon of Antwerp. In 1911, he exhibits in Munich; his works show a definite cubist influence in a well-tempered, organization and simplification bill. Arrived at a young age in Paris, he sets up his studio in Montmartre in the Hamlet of Artists, between Lepic Street and No. 11 Junot Avenue near those of Utrillo and Valadon; it is there that he will die. In 1912, he exhibits at the Salon des Independants. In 1914, he presents his works again in Belgium at the Brussels Triennal. After the war, he lives a very poor life but, with an optimistic temperament, he hopes to break through; he has to work to survive and he paints especially in the evening, especially during his first years in Paris. He exhibits during his lifetime in Paris, Munich, Brussels, Geneva, Italy, Stockholm, London and New York. He is now represented in numerous public and private collections, including the Museum of Modern Art in Paris, the museums of Le Havre, Libourne, Rouen, Saint-Etienne, Amsterdam and Tunis. Charles Kvapil is known mainly as a painter of characters, especially for his representations of naked women for which his friend Ginette often served as a model; he painted models in the studio, sometimes in front of his window with the Montmartre hill in the background; often bathers or female nudes placed in groups of characters, in the manner of Courbet and the Impressionists at their beginning. He is also creator of many portraits; but he did not disdain either the still lifes, especially the bouquets of flowers, or the landscapes, which form an important part of his work. He painted many regions, including Corrèze, where he "knew how to grasp the character of the country that is not his, with his usual mastery" (SSHA Bulletin Corrèze), the Mediterranean coast, Corsica, where he stays regularly in the 1920s and 1930s; in Paris he participated in exhibitions of painters of Corsica in 1925 and 1933. In 1939, at a new exhibition of Art Corse, at the Gallery The Team, still in Paris, he presented two paintings titled "Costa Brugiata, Cap Corsica "and" View of Rogliano ". He is also the creator of "On the Island" (1923), "Querciolo, Rogliano" (1923), "Corsican Woman" (1924), "Landscape of Corsica" (1933) (information Cronica di a Corsica). Charles Kvapil was influenced by fauvism and a very temperate cubism; Paul Cézanne and to a certain extent Matisse (as a colorist), also marked his style. Kvapil and his friends "thus engaged in thorough technical studies according to the masters, all without exception have loved the beautiful solid and dense material. Their work is related, moreover, not to the classical tradition of transparent painting, but to that of the opaque painting of Frans Hals, Rembrandt and Chardin, almost alone in force since the beginning of the nineteenth century [...] so they paint all in dense pasta but without excessive excess "... His palette is rich in cobalt blue and warm colors. His technique is voluntary and powerful. His works in oil are often of modest size, sometimes painted on panels, or on cardboard. He also practiced with great skill the technique of pastel. P. Béran, in a study he has dedicated to him, praises the richness of his material and all that his art owes to the joy of living. Large surrealist contemporary oil on canvas by Scottish artist Frank McLean Docherty R.S.W. This piece whilst wonderfully colourful, playful and erotic is typical of the witty sense of humour this artist displays in all his work. The title 'Hello Hen !' ( Hen being the scottish slang for 'girl' ) is used playfully as a double-entendre. In the image we see the artist has before him a beautiful naked woman and yet chooses to paint the real hen. Also we notice that the plant's flower heads under the woman are wilting and the artist pictured (a self portrait of Docherty), an older man, suggest that the artist's desires are on the wane. Docherty likes to tease us visually and asks questions and presents conundrums to the viewer. Frank McLean Docherty was born in Glasgow , Scotland in 1942. He became a student at Glasgow School of Art in 1960 and graduated from the Department of Printed Textiles in 1964. He taught in a secondary school in the East End of Glasgow for two years, thereafter departing to work in Dublin in the Republic of Ireland as a textile designer (Marks & Spencer, Heals and Liberty of London). He was also an illustrator for a range of newspapers and an Art Director of magazines. He had studied fragments of anatomy both to use them as models in large compositions but probably also because he represented so many fragments. It is clear that this fragment of anatomy has a power of suggestion and serves as a relay to the imagination of the viewer, who is led to imagine the rest of the body taken as a model. We can speak of metonymy in painting and it is clear that the artist had this in mind when he kept such studies with him. Jean-Jules-Antoine Lecomte du Nouÿ was born on 10 June 1842 in Paris. Originally of a Piedmontese origin, his family had been settled in France since the fourteenth century and by the time of his birth had reached the status of nobility He was an Orientalist French painter and sculptor. He was strongly influenced by the works and teachings of Charles Gleyre and Jean-Léon Gérôme. Lecomte du Nouÿ found inspiration for his art through extensive travels to Greece, Turkey, Egypt, Romania and Italy. The thematic content of Lecomte du Nouÿ's work was mainly figural, but also spanned over a vast range of imagery throughout his career, including classical, historical and religious. Lecomte du Nouÿ is known for remaining faithful to his detailed, realistic style throughout the extent of his career, despite the onset of the Impressionist, Fauvist and Constructivist artistic movements during his lifetime. His work is said to have contributed significantly to the establishment of an iconic repertoire representing the Orient in the nineteenth century.A Parisian street was named after him in 1932.  Lecomte du Nouÿ showed a strong attachment to visual art from a young age and was reported to have painted portraits of his father and uncle by the age of 6. In 1861, at 19 years of age, the artistic talents of young Jean-Jules-Antoine Lecomte du Nouÿ prompted him to become a pupil at the atelier of Swiss artist, Charles Gleyre. Under Gleyre's guidance Jean-Jules-Antoine learned the significance of individualistic style and gained the foundations of creative visual presentation. Later, Lecomte du Nouy further perfected his knowledge of the artistic form under the mentorship of Jean-Léon Gérôme, who was a renowned painter of the Academicism movement. It was at this time that Jean-Jules-Antoine learned the precision required to depict "la belle nature" —a style of illustration that aims to create the most beautiful representations of the natural form. Jan van Haensbergen was a painter of the Dutch Golden Age and a pupil of Cornelius van Poelenburgh (Utrecht 1594 - 1667). The painting we are presenting is inspired by Poelenburgh’s landscapes from his Italian sojourn. The dreamlike atmosphere of this Gathering in antique ruins appealed to us. Against a backdrop of antique ruins, three draped characters (perhaps bathers) are sitting in a circle, greeting a fourth character walking towards them. Their tranquility contrasts with the bustle of the other characters in the background. They constitute a vivid illustration of otium, this leisure time that allows us to realize our full potential. With this Arcadian landscape, Jan van Haensbergen invites us in turn to leave the hustle and bustle of everyday life behind, to take a break, to enjoy the present moment chatting with close friends… 1. Jan van Haensbergen, a landscape and portrait painter of the Dutch Golden Age Jan van Haensbergen was born in 1642 in Gorinchem, a town in southern Holland to the east of Rotterdam. He was a pupil of Cornelius van Poelenburgh, and began by painting landscapes inspired by those of his master, in an Italianate style. Between 1668 and 1669, he was registered at the Guild of Saint Luke in Utrecht. In 1669, he moved to The Hague, where he joined the Confrérie Pictura, an artist society founded in 1656. His portraits, which became his main activity as a painter after settling in The Hague, were strongly influenced by Caspar Netscher (Prague or Heidelberg 1639 - The Hague 1684), whom he met in The Hague and whose son Constantijn became his son-in-law by marrying his daughter Magdalena. In addition to his work as an artist, Van Haensbergen was also an art dealer, probably helped by his appointment as Dean of the Confrérie Pictura, where he also teached. 2. Their nonchalance contrasts with the bustle of the various characters in the background. The composition is punctuated by successive diagonals, and opens onto a landscape on the right, with a succession of mountainous planes.
