Konstantin Chmutin
Flight of the Elephant Garlic

2007

About the Item

Signed, titled and numbered from the edition of 50. Most of his mezzotints are tiny, and his subjects are the simplest of everyday objects: an egg, seashell, carrot, potatoes. Similar to the vegetables of Giuseppe Arcimboldi, the images combine technical complexity with an overlay of biomorphism, psychology and eroticism. Born in Leningrad in 1953, Chmutin currently splits his time between St. Petersburg and New York. While growing up in Russia, he pursued his studies at the Highest School of Civil Engineering. He is a member of the Saint Petersburg Artists Association in Russia and a Fellow Member of the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers, London. His mezzotints have been exhibited in many solo shows in the United States, Poland, Russia and Scotland and have been accepted in numerous international print competitions where they have won more than ten awards. In 1994, Chmutin was selected for inclusion in intergrafia '94 - World Award Winners Gallery in Katowice, Poland. Public Collections: Cracow National Museum, Johnson Museum of Cornell University, Stanford University Museum, Ashmolean Museum in Oxford, Hunterian Art Gallery in Glasgow, New York Public Library Victoria and Albert Museum in London.
