Movement : Cal. 877S rectangular-shaped mechanical movement, 17 jewels, Manual Winding Jump Hour.
Case : 14 Kt Gold, 21.7 mm Wide and Length 37 mm without lugs, including Lugs 46.4 mm
The present wristwatch is one of the exceedingly rare examples of a "doctor's" watch produced by Gruen in the late 1920s, Advertised as a timepiece for technicians and "radio and mechanical engineers"-anyone who needed to measure time in seconds, the calibre 877 movements were manufactured by Aegler in Bienne who also supplied movements to Rolex for their "Prince" model. Aegler, a very close neighbour to Gruen's Precision Factory, shared ownership during a time with both Gruen and Rolex, the full name of the company being "Aegler, Société Anonyme, Fabrique des Montres Rolex & Gruen Guild A". In 1930, Gruen sold their Aegler shares and moved the entire production to their Precision Factory in Bienne.
Preserved in extraordinarily crisp, original overall condition with all elements still retaining the factory finish, the rarity of this paragon of an Art Deco wristwatch.
The manufacture Gruen was originally founded in 1874 in Columbus, Ohio, by the German immigrant Dietrich Gruen. In 1903 a Swiss branch was founded under the name of The Gruen Watch Manufacturing Company, located in Bienne, Switzerland. The firm produced a wide array of wristwatches and was amongst the first watch manufacturers to introduce lady's wristwatches to the North American market.

This extremely rare in such a fine condition,
Art-Deco Rolex PRINCE wristwatch is dating back to circa 1939
Old magazine ads described this timepiece as
“a watch for men of distinction” and also “limited to a small number –
such fine watches cannot be produced quickly or in large quantities”,
while the Tatler’s 7th October 1931 edition called it
“a super-grade wristwatch of outstanding merit & distinction”,
which perfect accuracy is "verified by Swiss Government Scientists"

Its distinguished Rectangle Case is hinged & performed in 9K Rose Gold,
it’s comfortable & well-proportioned, measuring 20mm x 41mm,
it’s “wrist-hugging” & “Curvex” - curved to fit the wrist
Caseback tells us a lot about the fascinating history of original ownership,
as it’s engraved with:
“Presented to Bro. J. H. Till in appreciation of services as Secretary –
1929 – 1939 by Cobden Lodge # 381” –
(Cobden Lodge used to be a Masonic lodge in Melbourne, Australia)
Caseback is hallmarked with an iconic Rolex crown,
It’s stamped, signed & bearing a number on inside.
Bronze & champagne coloured Dial is in beautiful original condition,
featuring clear black hand-painted Arabic numerals,
original hands & relatively large sub-dial for centre seconds
