Fine large antique 14K yellow gold and carnelian Sun in Splendour intaglio Georgian signet ring
Early 19th Century
Superbly carved oval carnelian intaglio of an ornate heraldic crest with a central shield shaped coat of arms depicting a human face environed in rays of the sun, termed Sun in Splendour, surrounded by scrolled foliate mantling and topped by a crest of a nude crowned female figure raising her right hand in which she holds a Sun in Splendour. Substantial 14K yellow gold setting with stylized sea scallop design at the shoulders.

The Sun in Splendour motif in Heraldry appears on the Great Seal of Richard I of England at his shouder as Sun Full Radiant. It was also used by Edward II of England and Edward IV, the latter to commemorate his victory at the Battle of Mortimer's Cross during the War of the Roses. A meteorological phenomenon knowns as parhelion of three suns rising occurred at the dawn of the battle and Edward of York convinced the troops that it meant that God was on their side. William Shakespeare famously dramatized the parhelion in King Henry VI. The Sun in Splendour symbolizes magnificence, wealth and majesty.
