About the Item

The beauty of antique diamonds, besides being more sustainable, is in their individuality and artisanal cuts. At a time when the raw diamond was scrupulously inspected by the gemcutter to determine which cut would do it the most justice, and each facet was cut by hand, the resulting diamonds were all individual. Nowadays, most diamonds are cut in an automated process – they are being scanned by computers which then calculate the ideal cut in order to arrive at the same formulated product. The diamond at hand is a beautiful example of a hand-cut antique diamond. It is not round, like modern brilliants are, but cushion-shaped, cut in the so-called 'old mine cut'. This makes it likely that it was already cut in the first half of the 19th century, when a gemcutter wanted to preserve as much of the substance of the raw diamond as possible, whilst giving it an individual character and highlighting its qualities. In the later 19th century, around 1890, the diamond was set in the ring at hand. We can only guess what happened: Perhaps it had been part of a piece of Georgian jewellery that had become unfashionable, and whose gemstones its owner had reset into more modern pieces by a goldsmith, as was customary at the time. We can, however, be sure that the Victorian ring which holds the diamond now has once been especially designed for it. The ornamental prong setting is very airy, letting the diamond appear even larger, and allowing the light to offset its inner 'fire', as the rainbow-hued refraction is called. Even with the naked eye, one can make out the beauty of the cut, as the facets in the back shine through the large table in the front. The diamond weighs in at a substantial 2,974 carats and shows a beautifully warm light, so very different from the oftentimes harsh gleam of modern brilliants. A true one of a kind piece, and a perfect engagement ring for those with a taste for the individual and artisanal, this ring is accompanied by an independent certificate.
