Alexandrite Ring with Diamonds is Rare Even Among Alexandrite Rings

About the Item

Alexandrite is among the rarest colored gems on earth. This is easily explained when you consider the "ideal" coloring for this elusive gem: an emerald in the daylight, an amethyst when viewed beneath incandescent or candlelight. when In sizes above one carat, the value of this captivating gemstone exceeds that of emerald and even diamond or ruby. When large alexandrites of three, four, six or even ten-carats are set into jewelry, prices can soar toward or well into the six-figures. But here's the dirty little secret about alexandrite that nobody tells you: they're not usually very pretty gems. When you see photographs of alexandrite rings, pay special attention to the angle at which the gem is shot; typically alexandrite rings are shot from above a ¾ angle or in near profile. It's rare to see an alexandrite ring shot head-on. This is because alexandrites frequently display what is known as extinction, which is when a gemstone looks dark or black when viewed head-on through the table of the stone. What's more, the only place you're going to find the "ideal" alexandrite that looks like an emerald in daylight and an amethyst under incandescent light is at The Smithsonian. Most alexandrites display a color change from dull olive-green to unpleasant brownish-red. All of which makes the alexandrite featured in this ring all the more spectacularly rare. This alexandrite possesses a quality not seen in the vast majority of alexandrites offered at any price: beauty. By day, it could pass for a firey green garnet. It's not an emerald green; it's a little more yellow and less blue. It's closer to a Merelani mint garnet. But when seen by incandescent light, it suddenly leaps across the color wheel to become the very opposite of a bright, refreshing mint green: it is now the rich, warm color of the wild grapes that grow wild on our land when they're backlit by the sun. This GIA certified alexandrite measures 7.11 mm x 5.93 mm and has a depth of 4.25 mm totaling 1.48 carats. As anything over one-carat is extremely rare within the rarified world of alexandrite, this ring quite safely qualifies as *extremely* rare. The alexandrite has a good cut with no light distortion (extinction). Unlike so many alexandrites, you can face this one head-on and be delighted by its vibrant beauty. Alexandrites are a Type II gemstone meaning they are "usually included." This alexandrite is only slightly included, meaning that it's eye-clean. This rare chameleon of the gem world is set into a platinum band, prong-set within a tiered bezel. Two-dozen bright, white (G-H) eye-clean diamonds surround the alexandrite in a halo totaling .74 carats. There is elaborate platinum lattice under the galley and the interior of the band is fully hallmarked with a maker's mark, metal purity stamp and inscriptions for the carat weights of the gemstones. I have owned so many alexandrites —both as loose gems and set into jewelry— and always ben disappointed by them. I so desperately want to love them. But I never have, not until this ring. It's gorgeous. Even if it had no color change at all, the mint-green gem has so much sparkle and fire, which —again— I don't see in alexandrite. As a collector as opposed to a jeweler, I'm less interested in obtaining the largest gem of any given variety than I am an excellent specimen. I don't need a 10-carat alexandrite, especially not one that changes from one shade of dingy Army green to a blah brown. I'd much rather have a smaller (but still huge by alexandrite standards) stone that exhibits beautiful coloring and a strong color change, which this gem displays. After I bought the ring, I wore it on my pinkie finger around the house and I was constantly knocking things over because I wasn't watching where I was going. Would you? I mean, it changes color when you reach your hand into the refrigerator. And sometimes? If the lighting is just right, it will be both colors at once. I'm telling you, this ring is more than a ring. It's a living companion. It's the most "alive" stone you can imagine. This is a prize ring. This is an "it" ring. Currently a size 7, this ring could be resized by your local jeweler. It will ship with a GIA certificate.
