1953 Padgett & Braham Stunning guilloche 925 silver box
About the Item
Beautiful large design box suitable for various purposes with guilloché pattern decorations.
The box features the hallmark of Elizabeth Windsor's coronation in 1953. This object is entirely made of 925‰ silver.
The archives of Victoria and Albert Museum in London includes documentation from the firms of the Padgett and Braham group.
Stanley Padgett ( 1897 - 1986 ) was an entrepreneur with a family background in the jewellery
and silversmith trade who, at the age of 25, bought his first business J. Braham Ltd with a bank
loan of £100. It employed three silversmiths and one polisher to make silver cigarette cases. Mr
Padgett went on to acquire more firms between the 1930s and 1960s; the silversmiths C.H.
Dumenil in 1938, the well known and long established silversmiths Wakely and Wheeler in 1957,
the gilders and platers Pairpoint and Sons in 1963 and the Flute Makers' Guild and the
Birmingham silversmiths W.H. Manton in 1964. Monarch Shield Ltd, the company which
introduced a tarnish free silver protection to the UK, was added in 1966. By this date the company
had over 70 employees. A contemporary article about the firm stated that "since the war, Mr
Padgett has been collecting craftsmen - his aim being to assemble under one roof the most skilled
teams of experts available." The Birmingham gold wedding ring specialists H. Aston joined the
business in 1969 and Stanley Padgett's son John Padgett continued this tradition adding Edward
Barnard and Sons to the business in 1977. The insignia workshop was taken over from Garrards in
the 1980s. The shrinking market for commercially produced silver led to the diminution of the
trade and the business finally closed in 2006.

BERCA
A FAMILY STORY, THE STORY OF A JEWELLER
In 1927 Giovanni Battista Berca started creating so beautiful and so refined jewelry that his fame surpassed that of any other master goldsmith.
In a short space of time he became the personal jeweler of influential families who turned to him for their small masterpieces in the tradition of classical high jewelry. Giuseppe Berca, his son, refused to rest on his father’s laurels and decided that the tradition should be updated.
He transformed his workshop into a small company and put emphasis on design development creating his personal style. Following his father’s philosophy is now Marco Giovanni Berca running the company: aesthetic searches coupled with unusual choices in the material selection are the hinges that hold up his ongoing research. “Attention should be placed on the item from which our activity stems: the research and the selection of those gems that may naturally appear mysterious and strange and that, in the hands of the jeweler, transform themselves so to appear almost magical, thanks to their capacity of light, color and joy: that’s why behind each collection lies a stone: we are fascinated by a unique material, its light, its color, the luminous spark that can materialize in front of our gaze; all items that, in themselves, constitute a beginning, the beginning of a new research of forms and volumes fit to give expression to our idea of “bello” –he says.

David Andersen 1910 Art Nouveau Enameled Guilloche Snuff Box In .925 Sterling
By David Andersen
Located in Miami, FL
A guilloche enameled pill box designed by David Andersen.
Extremely rare early 20th century enamel pill-box, created in Norway during the late Edwardian and art nouveau period at the workshop of David Andersen, circa 1910. This beautiful box was carefully crafted with impeccable details in solid .925/.999 standard silver with gilded interiors finish. Made of rectangular form with curved edges and fitted with a five barrels hinged lid, that can be raised by a simple thumbpiece. Engine turned guilloche decoration topped with applications of translucent silvered-white and light purple enamels and finally embellished with tiny flowers motifs decorations in high relief.
Weight: 59.40 Grams, (38.08 Dwt).
Measurements: 65 mm by 38 mm and a height of 13 mm (2.56 x 1.50 x 0.51 Inches).
Hallmarks: Stamped with French and Norwegian marks, the maker's mark associated to David Andersen inside a cartouche, the mark for the assay of the silver S .925 and stamped twice with the French import mark of the swan, for importation. Very interesting exports and imports marks.
Note: The hallmark of a swan facing to the left inside an oval (Osprey-124), was introduced in 1893 for small silver items imported into France. The silver product need to have at least a standard assay of .800/999 or over. The swan mark indicates that the item was produced in a non-treaty country and served as an import identification. The swan mark used until 1970.
David Andersen
David Andersen was born in 1843 in Østre Toten, Innlandet to Anders Svendsen and Anne Margrethe Gulbrandsdatter, and was the father of goldsmith Arthur David-Andersen. He was one of the most important Norwegian goldsmiths. From 1859 he was in apprenticeship with the jeweler Jacob Tostrup in Christiania (now called Oslo). He spent several periods abroad, in Berlin, Stockholm, Paris and London. During his stay in London he also imported Norwegian filigree works to the United Kingdom. He established his own goldsmith workshop in Christiania 1876, which eventually became a leading company in the goldsmith industry in Norway. A significant part of his filigree works was exported to Great Britain. As of 1899 his company employed 92 men...
