"Spare Parts" Necklace in 14K Gold with Tahitian Pearl Drop & Vintage Tassel Fob
About the Item
This versatile necklace is hot off Eytan Brandes' bench but (with the exception of the pearl) is artfully composed entirely of vintage spare parts.
The pearl is a gorgeous purple and green Tahitian from our good friend George Hajjar of Seven Seas Pearls based in Los Angeles. Like us, George treasures his baroques. While a string of perfectly matched, perfectly round, perfectly perfect pearls is a rare and beautiful thing to behold, you can't beat baroques for sheer variety and individuality, plus you see colors you never see on matched strands simply because there are never enough of them! This particular pearl is a long drop with a defined circle in its middle that really points up the contrast between the vivid eggplant-colored top and the more subtle, steely green bottom.
The pearl is capped with a winsome little "fringed" cap -- a doo-dad Eytan found amongst his many doo-dads, accumulated over almost 50 years of tearing apart old jewelry. Lots of jewelry gets melted in a goldsmith's life, but a good goldsmith will always pluck off the useful bits first, knowing someday it might come in handy!
The chain segment -- with tiny rectangular long-short cable links -- that connects the pearl to the top ring is all that's left from a gorgeous, very long vintage chain we acquired at an antique jewelry trade show a few years ago.
The top ring, just under 12mm in diameter, was actually the eye end of a toggle clasp from a hideous 1980's bracelet that Eytan melted faster than you can say, "Don't get your jewelry pointers from 'Dynasty.'"
The tassel was attached to an over-the-top 1950's ladies wristwatch -- a bracelet watch with all kinds of goofy enamel, wirework and beading that was apparently supposed to suggest some mishmash of ancient (Egyptian, Etruscan, Greek...whatever) influences, since ladies of those epochs were known for their wristwatches. The tassel was one of many afterthoughts -- like the makers couldn't pile enough stuff on this watch before they called it day. However, if the watch was textbook gaudy, the tassel is exceptionally nice, eschewing the usual "pineapple" top for a sturdy and graphic wirework cage with a closed top. (People who are into tassels always prefer a closed top.)
So that's the pendant -- over 2 inches of spare parts.
The chain is also vintage. It's called a tinsel chain, but if you look at what modern search engines cough up for this term, you'll see a lot of ugly, thin, twisted chains and you will say, "yuck!" Old-style tinsel chains are much more built-up -- almost like a rope chain but meshier and a little more sparkly. It goes perfectly with the pendant, but the two can be worn separately. It has a spring ring closure.
Note that only the chain is stamped 14K gold. All other metal parts are tested and guaranteed to be 14K.
