About the Item

This is a rare Museum Quality Antique Egyptian Revival Snake motif Pendant with a Hand Carved Turquoise Victorian Scarab Swivel Fob. The pendant is 10-12 Karat Gold. The pendant dates to the 19th Century during the Victorian, Belle Epoque period. The elegant Egyptian Revival depiction of two entwined snakes is absolutely stunning. The snakes hold a spinning scarab fob. The stunning three dimensional scarab beetle bug insect is carved from natural Turquoise. The form and shape of the scarab beetle are wonderful. On the reverse of the swivel scarab are hieroglyphic images. This whimsical mystical snake and scarab pendant dances delightfully across the body and creates a conversation piece to be passed on for generations. And insect as well as snake inspired jewels are all the rage today. The jewel is the creation of a master artisan. Snake Jewelry Snake jewelry is all the rage today. In the Victorian era the snake was the symbol of eternal love. It has come to symbolize sexuality, rebirth and wisdom. Scarab Beetles The Scarab Beetle has been an extremely popular motif in jewelry throughout history since the time of ancient Egypt. It embodies the concept of existence, development, and growth, and was seen as a form of protection. The Victorians were fascinated with nature and particularly insects and their insect creations are incredible feats of jewelry making. Egyptian Revival During the 19th century, the discoveries of ancient archaeological finds influenced and brought on what is referred to as "archaeological revival jewelry," or "Egyptian revival jewelry." The initial Egyptian Revival period flourished from the 1820s onward, and was inspired by ancient Egyptian imagery, such as the scarab beetle, sphinxes, pharaohs, and hieroglyphics. The pendant is 1 1/8 inches (29mm) tall with the bales. It is 1 1/4 inches (32mm) wide. The scarab is 18mm by 15mm by 8mm. There may be a small nick off of the antique scarab stone. The pendant is 10-12 Karat Gold.

During the early 19th century, the discoveries of ancient archaeological finds influenced and introduced what is referred to as "Egyptian Revival Jewelry." The first Egyptian Revival period began around the 1820’s, inspired by the unearthing of ancient Egyptian ruins during that time. Images such as the scarab beetle, sphinxes, pharaohs, and hieroglyphics became popular motifs in fashion. Pieces were often crafted using a material known as Egyptian Paste or "faience", which is the oldest form of non-clay glazed ceramic and usually found in a range of blue and green colors.  In the 1920’s, there was another unearthing of treasures, making the trend popular once again. This scarab pendant is from that era—the third Egyptian Revival period. The scarab is a turqoise colored faience bead with brown and beige overtones in its recesses that delineate the shape of the beetle. There are hieroglyphics on the back of the scarab. At the bottom of the scarab is a round 14k gold ball that extends as a wire through the bead and forms a bale at the top. The pendant measures 15/16“ from the bottom of the ball to the top of the bail. The scarab measures 1/2” x 3/8”. The bale measures 5 mm. The piece weighs 1.63 grams.
