About the Item

A superb antique 18 karat yellow gold late Georgian cross, that is quite a statement due to its large size. Dating from the period 1820 –1837 (George IV 29 January 1820 – 26 June 1830) and measuring 9cm long, (3 ½") it is a stunning piece of Regency jewelry. Pendants were frequently worn during this period with the cross being the most fashionable, worn on chain necklets or velvet ribbon. This pendant cross has an oversize bale/loop to carry a chain or ribbon as desired. The detail displayed is marvellous with tiny gold ‘flowers’, bright bands of faceted polished gold, it pays homage to the goldsmith’s art with beadwork, fine wirework that resembles lace, and the centrepiece a beautiful butterfly that symbolises the soul in the language of jewelry. Psyche (Cupid and Psyche) is the goddess of the soul and all higher emotions including love with her symbol as the butterfly as depicted in this fabulous cross. During this period these amatory allusions were universally comprehended by all and in this case our cross carries a poignant symbol of love lost. On the reverse of the cross is a small round glass panel that holds hair as a mourning token. A fantastic piece of antique jewelry that can so easily be worn in a contemporary setting with a simple white shirt and jeans or worn in a more formal setting.
