Diamond "Dragonfly" Pendant with 0.35 Carats Mixed Old Cut Diamonds in Platinum

About the Item

This pendant was originally the top of an elaborate locket brooch -- a typical piece of sentimental Late Victorian or Early Edwardian "chatelaine" jewelry, where some functionality was implied but the function is subordinate to the goal of being sparkly and fetching. It was impossibly heavy and poorly balanced but Eytan liked the top portion -- the flourish of ribbons you see here. He therefore removed the bottom locket and pin hardware, then cleaned up or closed all of the joins. The resulting pendant is open to interpretation. While it's definitely intended to be a bow, we think it looks like a dragonfly, or it could also serve as a beautiful cross. It's meticulously crafted from every angle -- even the back and sides are embellished with raised scrollwork. The bottom part of the pendant is hinged to the center, giving the pendant a small amount of movement. The "wings" are openwork, with impossibly fine milgrain work. The center pieces have milgrained edges and are pavé-set with diamonds The diamonds are all small (ranging from 0.008 to 0.06) and an interesting mix of cuts. The largest stones are Old European cuts, but most are single cuts, and the very smallest stones are very rough Just-Making-It-Up-As-We-Go-Along cuts. A few of the stones are full cuts, and are clearly later replacements. For the bale, Eytan used the diamonds and bezels from an old ring -- a marquise and a single cut round -- nestling them in the crest of the top "bow" and tucking a sturdy wire keeper loop behind. Altogether, the diamond mish-mash of 21 stones ranges a bit in terms of color and clarity. -- Eytan rates them from H to J color VS1 to SI2 clarity. We can give you a detail breakdown if you're interested. The chain is a platinum, mirror-finish snake chain, 16" long and 1mm thick.* If you would like the pendant without the chain, or if you would like a different type of chain, please let us know. We think it looks best on tight links that convey a solid line, but there are many link designs that check that box. WEIGHTS & MEASUREMENTS: Pendant length (including bale): 34mm (just over 1-1/4") Pendant width (wingspan): 24mm (just under 1") Pendant weight: 5.8 grams Pendant weight: 5.8 grams Diamond weight (est.): 0.35 carats Chain length: 16" Chain thickness: 1mm Chain weight: 4.8 grams Total weight (pendant + chain): 10.6 grams No part of this pendant or its original pin hardware or locket piece was marked -- not even a purity stamp. We think this piece is probably American, custom-made, and dates from the late 19th century to the very early years of the 20th century. Eytan marked the back PT and PLAT for platinum. *Because snake chains are impossible to fix once they're kinked, and because yours truly can be a bit of a gorilla when she's taking photos, we used an old 14K model chain for our photos. The chain included with this pendant is brand new and platinum. It's identical in appearance to the model chain (1mm, 16"), only pristine and its lobster clasp is round instead of rectangular.

"Rose Drop" Pendant with Sapphires & Old Cut Diamonds on Chain in Mixed Gold
By Eytan Brandes
Located in Sherman Oaks, CA
Eytan Brandes assembled this graceful, sexy little pendant from three different pieces: The 18 karat yellow gold "rose" came off of a frankly hideous 1940s brooch. (The sum of its parts has proved greater than the whole; we're still using bits torn off this monster, and the pieces -- little petals and flowers and leaves and stems -- always look great when they're separated from the mother ship, but when combined in one brooch: a garish mess!) The "stem" was actually a link from a very old (pre-1900), very fabulous but very fussy (and very prongy) diamond bracelet which Eytan resized for a customer, keeping a link as payment. The bottom diamond was badly damaged so rather than trying to match the top diamonds, Eytan replaced it with a nice sapphire. The little 14 karat white gold tri-tipped top piece was the bale from a 1960s birthstone pendant, which Eytan scored and trimmed to match the stem. Finally, Eytan added the perfect delivery system: a choker-length Boston link...

Antique Old Cut Diamond & Pearl Gold Pendant with Optional Akoya Pearl Necklace
Located in Sherman Oaks, CA
We acquired this extraordinary pendant from an antique jewelry dealer in New Zealand. Sort of a hybrid between a garland and a wreath, it boasts at least 1.7 carats in old cut diamonds plus eight pearls, all meticulously set from its hinged bale to its hinged diamond "tail." The enhancer bale is split in the back so that it can be worn with pearls. To that end, we're including a gorgeous 16" strand of 5.5 to 6mm Akoya saltwater pearls. We had these pearls strung specifically for this pendant, and to give the necklace a more contemporary feel, the pearls have been fully knotted in black silk, which we think really pops with the oxidized face of the pendant. The closure is a 14 karat white gold pearl clasp. WEIGHTS & MEASUREMENTS: Pendant Length: 2" Pendant Width (at widest point): 1-1/8" Pendant Weight: 7.15 grams Necklace Length: 16" (See below for more information about these pearls) Total Weight (pearl necklace + pendant): 17 grams Diamonds: 54 stones ranging from 1.2mm to 3.9mm for a total estimated diamond weight of 1.73 carats. More information on the diamonds is provided below. Pearls (Pendant): Eight pearls ranging from 3.5mm to 5.6mm for a total estimated pearl weight of 0.59 grams (0.157 momme). More information on the pearls is provided below. METALS & PENDANT AGE: We think this pendant probably dates from the late 19th or very early 20th century. While the pearls and the diamonds provide clues, the big tipoff is the fact that the stones are set in a thin layer of silver soldered onto 14 karat gold. This technique -- a thin layer of white metal (platinum was also used after around 1870) -- was used until white gold came into general use in the mid- to late 1910s. The distinctive black metal finish is nothing more than generations of the silver's natural oxidization. THE DIAMONDS: The diamonds on this piece predate the proliferation of bright white and clean South African diamonds...

150 Carat Custom-Cut Golden Quartz & Diamond Pendant in White Gold
By Eytan Brandes
Located in Sherman Oaks, CA
Story time! About ten years ago, one of Eytan Brandes' customers bought this enormous quartz at a gem show and asked Eytan to make her a diamond pendant to show it off. Eytan made the pendant, set the diamonds, added a fixed chain, then, well, he dropped the quartz. It didn't break, but it suffered an internal (not surface-reaching) fracture that is more or less visible depending on the angle of the pendant. You can see it in the photos for yourself. Eytan told the client, went back to the original gem dealer, and ordered up another enormous custom-cut quartz. Since the measurements of the new stone were different, he made an entirely new pendant for the new stone and the customer went away happy. Phew. That left Eytan with a big flawed quartz and a big gold pendant. Fast forward to 2022: after years of languishing in the back of the safe, Eytan decided that it would be a shame to deny these two outlandish baubles a chance. He made some changes, though. First, he dipped the pendant in rhodium, turning it white. Then he removed the chain, which oriented the pendant horizontally, and he added a new bale (fashioned from a 1950s white gold wedding band!) so that the pendant now hangs vertically. The 82 diamonds on the halo are all tiny but good quality (G-H color and VS clarity) natural, untreated earth-mined and full cut diamonds with a total weight of 0.40 carats. The four diamonds on the bale are of lower quality (probably more like J-K color and SI clarity), with an estimated total weight of about 0.04 carats. The quartz is a 150 carat...
