About the Item

The Danu Sheela-Na-Gig Amulet is made with 18ct Fairmined gold from Peru. She is made by hand using a technique I developed on layering gold sheet and is entirely unique. This is a pain-staking process that delivers a look that cannot be compared to CAD or cast pieces. Danu is the second piece from The Divine Goddess collection out of seven. Chances are you may have never heard of a Sheela-Na-gig. There is a lot of mystery surrounding these figurines, but there is no definitive conclusion as to why they exist. I first came across her as a stone carving, created by my late brother-in-law Caspar, where she sat proudly at the entrance to the walled garden he shared with my sister. This creation in gold is inspired by his work and in honour of him as a man who loved women. We miss you. Sheelas began their life as ancient stone carvings predominantly found above the entrances of old churches, monasteries, castles, and gateposts from as early as the 11th century. Today, the best ones can be found in Ireland but there are also many examples throughout the UK and Europe. The church destroyed many of these precious carvings in the 17th century for being un-Christian. Sheelas depict a female figure, often hag-like, in a squatting position, holding open her vagina. There are several theories on why they exist and where they originate although none are proven. Some scholars believe she was initially a Scandinavian goddess who made her way to the UK in the 11th century during the Norman conquest. In contrast, the church insisted they existed to warn men against the temptations of lust and sin. Some say they were put above entrances of buildings because they offered protection from evil, while others believe they are symbols of fertility or that they healed the sick or helped in childbirth. Other theories suggest they offered luck and were symbols of prosperity. My Sheela-Na-Gig is a goddess whose extraordinary magical powers come from her vagina. She is beaming light out of it to heal the world. I named her Danu after a Celtic goddess of fertility and wisdom. I hope you love her as much as I do. My jewellery carries a high vibration of love. Whilst working with gold I sing ancient healing mantras and weave blessings and prayers into the very bones of them. I like to think of my jewels as ‘Little Gold Prayers’.
