Bulgari Diamond Pearl Demi-Parure Suite
About the Item
This Bulgari Diamond and Pearl Demi-Parure Suite is a rare Art Deco-inspired work for the Italian jewelry house known for voluminous forms, signature sunny shades of yellow gold, and vibrantly colored gemstones composed in curvaceous patterns. This suite is comprised of three exquisite pieces -necklace, earrings, and ring. Each piece is a complex geometric variation on a theme where round white and Tahitian black pearls are juxtaposed against perfect-square 2x2 grids of round brilliant-cut diamonds. There is harmony in the math, and delight that borders on titillation in the interruption or alteration of the pattern. Bulgari patterns, especially exemplified in the scales of the signature sinuous and alluring Serpenti, are often interrupted to dramatic effect. It a metaphor for the sexy allure which underlies all Bulgari pieces made in their own inimitable Italian style that keeps us in a state of longing.
The necklace establishes all the patterns which the ring magnifies in single focus and the earrings reinterpret. The necklace is delicate with black and white pearls spaced along a 18K white gold chain, culminating in a concentration of all motifs dangling from three short strands. The estimated weight of diamonds is 1.90 carats of F-G color and IF-VVS clarity. The necklace length is adjustable, the shortest is 15" (38 cm), the longest 17.5" (44.45 cm). Pendant is additionally 2.5" (6.35 cm) in length.
The focal point of the necklace is the same focal point of the ring, wrought large: one black Tahitian pearl flanked by two diamond grids mounted in 18K white gold. The estimated weight of diamonds for the ring, size US 6.5, is 0.48 carat of F-G color and IF-VVS clarity.
The earrings are a mirror image pair with three dangling strands holding all elements in perfect balance: black and white pearls, diamond grids, and white gold studs suspended from unclosed circles that resemble the letter C. The estimated weight of diamonds for the earrings - which are clip-back with a post option for pierced ears - is 1.60 carats of F-G color and IF-VVS clarity. The earrings measure 2.75" (6.98 cm) in length.

Bulgari
Greek silversmith Sotirios Voulgaris arrived in Rome in 1881 and set up his own shop there in 1884, calling it Bulgari, an Italianization of his last name (in the brand's logo, it's styled BVLGARI, using the classical Latin alphabet in a nod to ancient Roman culture). In 1905, he opened the company’s flagship boutique on Rome’s Via dei Condotti. Since then, Bulgari has looked to Rome as a source of reference for its fanciful and decidedly romantic designs for necklaces, bracelets, earrings and other accessories.
Although the iconic jewelry house found success with its silverwork and Art Deco designs, popular through the 1920s, Bulgari’s signature style — bold, often using yellow gold embellished with big colorful gemstones — began to emerge when Sotirios’s sons inherited the business, in 1932.
The brand truly hit its stride in the dolce vita era of the 1950s and ’60s, when the founder’s grandsons Paolo, Gianni and Nicola Bulgari decisively departed from demure traditional styles to develop the house’s exuberant multi-gem looks, attracting celebrity collectors like Elizabeth Taylor.
In the 1940s, Bulgari debuted perhaps its most famous design, the Serpenti bracelet watch. The piece’s snakelike coils were made possible by the tubogas jewelry technique, which links a flexible series of thin horizontal bands. Both the sleek, modern tubogas construction and the sinuous snake motif continue to be synonymous with the Bulgari brand.
