About the Item

The commercial mining of Australian opals in fine jewellery quality only dates back to the 1890s, when these gemstones were mined in Queensland and shipped to Great Britain, from where they were also exported to the continent. This also explains the fashion of opal jewellery that followed these developments. This necklace is one of the early pieces of this fashion: it presents 16 Australian opals of a blue and green base colour, the surface of which is speckled with yellow and red reflexes. In its design, the necklace is a perfect embodiment of the refined and playful taste of the 1890s. Foliate scrolls enclose the opal cabochons, linked by star motifs, while a bow sits atop the pendant. The formal vocabulary is reminiscent of the Rococo era, elements of which enjoyed another spike in popularity during the late 19th century. Its link to the Belle Époque is evident in both era’s longing for lightness and playfulness, in a love of stylised natural forms as well as the lavish use of diamonds, which gleam ever more brightly in settings of silver. Approx. 5,06 ct of diamonds accompany the opals. While the necklace is forged of gold, each element is worked with a top layer of silver, in order not to taint the diamonds’ colour. The diamonds were all cut by hand in the old European and rose cut, so that each stone is individual. Whilst their brilliance lends the design the splendour so characteristic of the Belle Époque, the diamonds also make for a neutral entourage for the opals, the colours of which seem to change with each of the wearer’s movements. As with some of the especially precious and lavish designs of the time, the pendant of this one, too, can be removed. It can be worn separately on a simple chain, and the back reveals fittings on which it would have been able to be screwed onto a brooch mounting back in the day. The necklace is in very good condition and even today allows us to imagine the glamour of an era in which beauty was valued above all else. We discovered the piece in London.
