About the Item

This magnificent museum quality antique suite (parure) of malachite jewelry is a great rarity. Russian 19th century large suites of jewelry are not seen on the market. The original brown leather case significantly increases the rarity of the parure. This exceptional parure from the mid Victorian era is complete and in excellent condition for its age. The parure consists of a necklace, a bracelet, a pair of clip-on earpendants, a brooch, and a pair of cufflinks. Finely polished oval plaques of Siberian malachite are set in 14K polished gold. Every piece is marked with 56 zolotnik old Russian gold standard (14K), St Petersburg assay stamps and maker's initials. The necklace is 47,5 cm (37 1/4 in.) long. The largest central malachite panel is 3,3 x 4,1 cm (1 1/4 x 1 5/8 in.) Width of the bracelet - the central plaque 34 mm (1 3/8 in.), other panels 24 mm (15/16 in.) Length - 17,7 cm (6 7/8 in.) Closers of the earpendants have been replaced by clip-ons in the early 1900s. The ear pendants are marked with St. Petersburg assay stamps from the 1908-1917 period. The case is stamped in French: F. SCHNEGAS 17, Grande Morskoi St. PETERSBOURG Karl Ferdinand Schnegas, a St. Petersburg goldsmith, merchant of the 2nd guild, owner of a jewelry shop at Grand Morskaya Street 17, recorded in archives in 1867 (A.Ivanov Gold and Silversmiths In Russia 1600-1926, volume II, page 265, No. 4746). Schnegas shop was located on the most prestigious jewelry street in the city which lead to the Winter palace of the Tsars. Historically, the street was occupied by high-end jewelry shops (including Faberge) and was also called Brilliant Street. Members of the Russian Imperial family and court aristocracy shopped there for the most fashionable jewelry of the period. Malachite was extensively used to decorate palaces in Russia throughout the 19th century, malachite jewelry is rare and highly unusual.
