Castellani Ancient Silver Greek Coins circa 300BCE 15kt Gold Bulla Earrings

About the Item

Etruscan Style 15kt yellow gold Bullas centered by two Ancient 300 BCE silver Greek coins. The gold granulation is hand applied, each wire and bead at a time. The process of gold granulation was created in Ancient Mediterranean civilizations. Castellani in the circa mid 1800’s became the first jeweller to study and re-create this art of goldsmithing. The wires are hinged from the top of the bulla and flow free downward, there is no hook or catch. The length including the hinged wires are 2.5” and the width 1.5” (7cm length and 3cm width). The total weight of the earrings is 25.2 grams. In the Ancient Roman Civilization, the bulla was worn around the neck as a locket to protect against evil spirits and forces. Bullae were made of differing substances depending upon the wealth of the family. The Castellani and Double C logo plates are affixed to the back of each earring. Castellani’s Jewellery from the 19th Century is in museums: British Museum; Victoria & Albert Museum; Metropolitan Museum of Art; The Smithsonian’s Cooper Hewitt Museum to name a few); exhibitions as well as in private collections. Fortunato Pio Castellani can be called the "Father of Archeological Revival Jewellery". In the mid 1800's in Rome, Castellani had the entree to visit the Ancient Etruscan ruins. He was able to study these Ancient designs as well as other Ancient Mediterranean civilizations’ jewellery and started to create and re-design under his brand.

A magnificent pair of Day-to-Night earrings from the Georgian (ca1750s) era! Crafted in 15kt yellow gold and topped in sterling silver, these incredible earrings begin with an elegant floral cluster of 9 Rose Cut diamonds in patinaed collet settings. The cluster secures to the ear with hinged European back-to-front wires, one hand marked with “40". An elegant chandelier of Rose Cut diamonds can be threaded through the European wires, converting the pair from Day to Night, dangling with lovely movement. A total of twenty-one Rose Cut diamonds adorn the addition. Three tiers of three diamonds dangle from the setting, glittering as they catch the light and beautifully frame the face. The diamonds have a collective approximate total weight of 2.5ctw and are held in open-backed settings, allowing light to dance through, enhancing their sparkle. These exquisite versatile earrings would be a spectacular addition to any Georgian collection! The earrings hang an overall 2” in length including the earring wires. The Rose Cut cluster...
