"Playing the Harmonica", Mid Century Enamel Panel of Black Woman in Red & Black

About the Item

Beautifully made by the last of America's great Mid Century enamel artists, this panel depicts a Black female figure in a resplendent shirt that is alive with an abstract pattern in scarlet, orange and white, her arms akimbo and her body alive with the music. The artist was Judith Daner, the last of a line of brilliant enamelists who practiced their art -- in part inspired by the Wiener Werkstätte -- from the 1930s to the 1950s and 1960s. Earlier artists included Edward Winter and Karl Drerup, but Daner started her artistry in the 1950s. She worked for Bovano of Cheshire, CT, and Robert Wuersch Associates of Fall River, MA, and later worked out of her own studio. She carried out commissions for corporate institutions, and submitted three pieces to the 1975 Limoges Biennale Internationale in France. The enamel is mounted on a lovely panel of American walnut. It is monogrammed in the lower righthand corner.
