Antique Sampler, 1834, By Mary Thornhill

About the Item

William IV Sampler, 1834, By Mary Thornhill. The sampler is worked in silk threads on a linen ground. Meandering strawberry border. Colours green, gold, silver, pink, brown and blue. Inscription reads, 'The leaves are green the rose is red, hear is my name when I am dead.' And, 'But now look hear and you may see, what Care my parents took on me.'. Signed and dated, 'Mary Thornhill her Work made in the twelfth Year of her age. 1834 February 8th.'. A wonderful set of motifs, including a house with a rather large cat sat on the fence beside, a girl riding on the back of a donkey, stars, flowers, fruit baskets, fir trees, fruit trees and birds. Framed in an old, possibly original, black, ebonised wood frame with rippled, old glass. Mounting: The sampler is fixed to a wood stretcher frame. Frame backed with brown paper and sealed with tape.. Dimensions exclude the frame and slip.

  • Condition:
    Good. No holes. No stains but uniform age darkening of backing canvas. Stitch loss/thinning to one motif. Colours are all good and strong with no noticeable fading. The silks bright and glossy. Neatly stretched. Frame showing slight wear.
