View of Porto Praya Bay, Island of St. Jago (Santiago, Cape Verde), circa 1836

About the Item

Title: View of Porto Praya Bay, Island of St. Jago Description: This serene lithograph, circa 1836, depicts a view of Porto Praya Bay on the island of St. Jago (modern-day Santiago, Cape Verde). The tranquil waters of the bay are animated by a rowing boat in the foreground and several anchored ships, including the French corvette Astrolabe, resting further afield. The shoreline reveals a settlement nestled beneath imposing mountains, with its neat row of structures reflecting European colonial influence. The rugged cliffs framing the bay and the distant peaks create a dramatic contrast with the calm sea, evoking the isolated beauty of this remote Atlantic island. This print is part of Louis Auguste de Sainson's illustrations from Dumont d'Urville’s exploratory expedition and was later reproduced in Brodtmann’s *Entdeckungs, Reise der Franzosischen Corvette Astrolabe*. It offers not only a geographical representation but also insight into the maritime practices and exploratory ventures of the 19th century. Condition Report: Light toning and faint foxing in margins, with minor edge wear. The image area remains clean and sharp, showcasing excellent detail and contrast. Handling wear is minimal, and the overall condition is very good.
