Original Engraved Print by Pierre Joseph Redouté, 1802, Les Liliaceés

About the Item

A stunning original engraving from The Lilies (Les Liliaceés) by P.J. Redouté, considered the greatest botanical artist of all time. Produced between 1802 and 1816 under the patronage of Josephine Bonaparte, Pierre-Joseph Redouté’s Les Liliacées contained 495 plates in 8 volumes, detailing the various plant species of and related to the lily family and beyond. The plates are drawn from Empress Josephine’s extensive collection of plants in her gardens at Malmaison, where Redouté worked as a botanical artist. The technique is steeple engraving, finished by hand-coloring, in many cases by Redouté himself. Only around 200 copies of Les Liliaceés were produced, and it's still considered Redouté's greatest achievement, even larger than his popular "Les Roses", because of the thoroughness of the descriptions, the detail of the engravings and the sheer number of species captured in a single collection. This plate is Number 8, Pancratium Maritimum, which is located within the first volume, created in 1802. Well preserved, mounted on a 1970s solid wood frame with a plexiglass cover. The original green color presents some fading / discoloration, due to age and UV exposure. The print dimensions are 21 x 14 inches. On Frame: 28 in. H x 21" W x 2" D.
