About the Item

A late 19th or early 20th Century monumental color print by French artist Henri Riviere (1864 - 1951). The print shows a man and his horse in the French countryside, haystacks visible. The style is at once French and Japanese. From the artnet website, a short biography on Mr. Riviere "Henri Rivière was a French artist best known for his delicate illustrations of Breton landscapes and shadow puppet theater at the Chat Noir Cabaret in Paris. Both art forms showcased Rivère’s ingenious use of negative space, wherein he used contour and light to create complex scenes and figures with a realistic sense of depth. Born on March 11, 1864 in Paris, France, he studied with the painter Émile Jean Baptist Phillipe Bin and soon after began contributing illustrations to Parisian magazines and journals. Rivière was influenced by both Impressionism and especially the prints of Japanese artists Ando Hiroshige and Katsushika Hokusai, whom were popular in Europe at the time. Today, the artist’s works are in the collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, the Musée d’Orsay in Paris, The Museum of Modern Art in New York, and the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., among others. Rivière died on August 24, 1951 in Paris, France." For a little bit more about the artist, I offer this short biography from the Armstrong Gallery site, "Many artists can be credited with helping develop the interest in color printmaking in the Western Hemisphere. However, only Henri Rivière (French, 1864-1951) can truly be called the father of this artistic development in Europe, and later the United States. Years before artists consider the artistic riches provided by lithography in color, and at a time when Japanese woodcuts are making their way onto Western art markets, Rivière create color woodcuts and a few years later color lithographs. These compositions are so far removed from the esthetic of late 19th century France that he does not immediately elicit praise. But other artists, and a broader public, soon discover his amazing compositions. From the late 1880’s to the onset of the First World War, Rivière is an artist whose colors and technique inspire whole generations." This large scale color print has been framed under plexiglass. The image size is approximately 32.5" wide by 21.5" high.

Wear consistent with age and use. In good antique condition with age appropriate wear. This print has not been examined out of the frame. The later plexiglass and frame show scratches and wear.
