J. Kip and L. Knyff 18th Century Hand Colored Engravings, Set of 4

About the Item

Set of four antique hand-colored engravings. "Britannia Illustrata," the publication in which these prints originally appeared, was one of the most important topographical works of the 18th century. It was first published in 1707 and included 80 topographical views of large country estates. Johannes "Jan" Kip was a draughtsman and engraver, beginning his career in his native Amsterdam before moving to London at the end of the seventeenth century. He produced portraits, topographical views, and book illustrations, with his most important work being a series of attractive and informative bird's-eye views of English country seats. Kip initially collaborated on this project with fellow Dutch artist Leonard Knyff, with Knyff creating the drawings and Kip the etchings. As the project developed, however, Kip created his own drawings and etchings. Included as shown are Westwood in Worcestershire, Esher Place in the County of Surrey, Hampton Court in Herefordshire, and Coley, near Reading in the County of Berks.
