Antique Print of a Burial at Sea, circa 1870

About the Item

Antique print titled 'Peace - Burial of Wilkie'. Moonlit coastal view, with funeral steamboat in the centre, figures aboard raising torches. The painter David Wilkie died of typhoid on his return from the Holy Land in 1841. The Governor of Gibraltar refused to allow the body ashore and Wilkie was buried at sea. Turner painted the original painting in his memory, placing a funeral carriage on the deck of the ship to stand for the public funeral Wilkie should have had. When asked about the unnaturally black sails, Turner said he wished he could make them blacker still, revealing his personal response to Wilkie’s premature death. Turner paired his painting with War. The Exile and the Rock Limpet, setting up an ironic comparison with Napoleon’s reputation. Artists and Engravers: Engraved by J. Cousen after J.M.W. Turner. Published by Appleton & Co. Condition: Good, minor wear and soiling. Blank verso, please study image carefully. Date: circa 1870 Overall size: 25.5 x 36 cm. Image size: 19 x 19.5 cm.
