Antique Bird Print of the Little Owl by Sepp & Nozeman, 1770
About the Item
Antique print titled 'Noctua Minor Aucuparia'. This print depicts the little owl (Dutch: steenuil). The little owl (Athene noctua) is a bird that inhabits much of the temperate and warmer parts of Europe, Asia east to Korea, and North Africa. It was introduced into Britain at the end of the 19th century and into the South Island of New Zealand in the early 20th century.
This print originates from 'Nederlandsche Vogelen, volgens hunne huisdouding, aert, en eigenschappen beschreeven", Amsterdam, 1770-1829 by C. Nozeman, M. Houttuyn and J.C. Sepp. This is the most important and first study in the Netherlands of ornithology at that time. The birds are depicted as they are in life, said to be depicted close to life-sized and in their environment.

Antique Bird Print of the Certhia by Sepp & Nozeman, 1770
Located in Langweer, NL
Antique print titled 'Certhia'. This print depicts certhia with nest and eggs (Dutch: Boomkruipertje). Certhia is the genus of birds containing the typical treecreepers, which together with the African and Indian spotted creepers make up the family Certhiidae. The treecreepers are small woodland birds, very similar in appearance (so they can present serious identification problems where two species occur together). They are brown with streaks above and white below. They have thin pointed down-curved bills, which they use to extricate insects from bark. They have stiff, pointed tail feathers, like woodpeckers and woodcreepers, which they use to support themselves on vertical trees...
