1960's. Salvador Dalí, "Cerberus Inferno #6" Woodblock Print Framed Under Glass

About the Item

1960's Salvador Dalí's Cerberus Inferno 6, is part of Dalí’s larger series of illustrations for Dante Alighieri’s Divine Comedy. This series was commissioned to mark the 700th anniversary of Dante’s birth. Dalí completed 100 watercolors illustrating The Divine Comedy, which were then translated into woodblock prints by artisans under Dalí’s supervision. The series explores the realms of Hell (Inferno), Purgatory, and Paradise. In Cerberus Inferno 6, Dalí depicts Cerberus, the three-headed dog that guards the third circle of Hell, where the gluttonous are punished. The scene is surreal and energetic, filled with Dalí’s characteristic loose lines, vivid colors, and dreamlike atmosphere. Dalí’s interpretation is more abstract and fluid than traditional depictions, with swirling forms and a sense of motion that reflects the torment and chaos of Dante's Inferno. The quality of craftsmanship in the print reflects Dalí’s close involvement in the process, overseeing the woodblock artisans to ensure fidelity to his watercolor originals. Signed in the plate with an embossed logo in the sheet lower right, mounted and framed under glass, Dimensions: 13"h x 10.25"w (sheet) 23.5"h x 21"w (frame) Condition: Good, slight wear at edges of sheet, not examined out of frame. About the Artist: Spanish Artist Salvador Dalí was a Surrealist icon best known for his articulate skill and exquisite works of art. Dalí is among the most versatile and prolific artists of the 20th century, partially due to his explorations of subconscious imagery. He practiced sculpting, printmaking, fashion, advertising, filmmaking and more. His flamboyant personality and mischievousness contributed to his rise to becoming an international celebrity, however, his mastery of art is arguably his most distinct attribute.
