1940s Monumental "Modulor Man" Print After Le Corbusier

About the Item

An incredible and monumental 'Modulor Man' print from the 1940s after Le Corbusier. This stunning piece, likely one-of-a-kind, came from the estate of Radislav Sutnar, the son of Ladislav Sutnar, a Czech graphic designer and a leading pioneer of information design and information architecture (more widely known today as "infographics") in the 1930s and 1940s. While we don't know the origin of this print, we do know that Sutnar and Le Corbusier existed in the same orbit, and it's highly possible they worked together at some point during their careers. As well as the large 'Modulor Man' depiction, the print features lines, measurements, and even notations, such as "Trim Line", and even "Merry Xmas", as well as different colors, "Blue", "Red", etc. It is possible this print was created as a template for a project, or something similar. This massive print was discovered rolled up in an old, cardboard tube, where it lived for decades. The print is in excellent condition for its age, with some light creasing and some wear along the edges. It was professionally framed 4 years ago for about $1,500. There is some light cosmetic wear to the frame as well as some minor damage to a bottom corner of the frame. Conceptually, the 'Modulor Man' was meant as an anthropometric scale of proportions created by Le Corbusier in 1948 to embody a “range of harmonious measurements to suit the human scale, universally applicable to architecture and to mechanical things”. In devising this system, Corbusier was joining a 2000-year-old hunt for the mathematical architecture of the universe, a search that had obsessed Pythagoras, Vitruvius and Leonardo Da Vinci alike. This massively impactful piece will undoubtedly anchor any space. There is nothing quite like it out there, and it is exceptionally eye-catching. It can be leaned up against a wall, as in the photos, or can be hung on a large wall.
