Man in the White Suit East German Film Poster, Art by Hans Hillmann, R1964

About the Item

The 60s German re-release poster for much-loved Ealing classic The Man in the White Suitfeatures some very clever, Bass-esque, graphics by Hans Hillmann. Cool, contemporary, sharp suited artwork. Hans Hillmann (1925 - 2014), one of the most important Modernist German graphic artists and, considered the founding father of the modern German film poster, designed over 130 film posters between 1953 and 1974 for Walter Kirchner's distribution company Neue Filmkunst. Kirchner hired Hillmann straight out of art school and afforded him incredible freedom to promote the international arthouse classics he distributed in whichever way he chose. This resulted in an impressive body of work and some truly inspiring designs for landmark films such as Akira Kurosawa’s The Seven Samurai and Robert Bresson’s Pickpocket. During his prolific, almost six decade long career, he designed over 160 film posters and over 600 other drafts and illustrations. With his distinctive style Hillmann’s designs never failed to deliver and his artistry is greatly admired by many, including acclaimed international filmmakers such as Jean-Luc Godard who decorated an apartment in Two or Three Things I Know About Her with Hillmann’s posters. This vintage movie poster is sized 23 1x4 x 32 3/4 inches, it will be sent rolled (unframed). Year: R1964 Poster Type: GER A1 Style: - Art By: Hans Hillmann Rolled/Folded/Other: Rolled

"The Man with the Golden Arm" Original US Film Poster
By Saul Bass
Located in London, GB
Original US film poster. Saul Bass was born in New York. Bass was a rotund, jovial character. After studying at the Art Students League and graduating from Brooklyn College, he moved west at the age of 26, and is credited with introducing an East Coast sensibility to marketing. He saw advertising as a means for funding his passion for the movies, and after 6 years working with a number of agencies, he finally had the funds to establish his own. All this time, he was forging ever-closer links with the film industry, and in 1954 this led to a commission from Otto Preminger to design the poster for Carmen Jones. The following year the director invited the artist to work on The Man With The Golden Arm...
