"This first edition exhibition poster was designed and created by Jasper Johns for a retrospective of his work at the Whitney Museum in 1977-1978. It was published by the Whitney Museum and printed by Universal Art Limited Editions/Telamon Editions Limited (c) 1977. Brilliant and bold, it captures Johns' style and reflects his genius. Jasper Johns (b. 1930) is an American painter, sculptor and printmaker whose work is associated with abstract expressionism and pop art. Widely celebrated as one of the most influential American artists of the postwar era, he is particularly well known for his paintings and prints of the American flag. He is also one of the best-selling contemporary artists of all time, as his art appeals both to art connoisseurs and to the general public. His works are owned and displayed by museums, private galleries and individuals throughout the world."

Jasper Johns
Jasper Johns is an American painter, sculptor and printmaker born on May 15, 1930. He eventually became one of America's best known post–Abstract Expressionists and Minimalists.
Johns's name is most often associated with pictorial images of flags and numbers and Pop art subjects that he depicted in Minimalist style with an emphasis on linearity, repetition and symmetry. He completed his first flag painting in 1955, alphabet subjects in 1956, sculpture in 1958 and lithographs in 1960.
