Alexander Calder Original Exhibition Poster for Rolly-Michaux Gallery 1976

About the Item

Alexander Calder Exhibition Poster for Rolly-Michaux Gallery 1976 This piece is an original vintage poster advertising an exhibition of Calder's "Gouaches and Important Lithographs" at the Rolly-Michaux Galleries. The solo exhibition took place at their New York gallery October 14 - November 13, 1976 and at their Boston Gallery November 11 - December 24, 1976. The poster depicts one of Calder's iconic works, "Red Nose." This piece is housed in a black metal frame. Alexander Calder (1898-1976) was an American artist and sculptor who revolutionized sculpture by introducing movement. He's best known for inventing the mobile, a kinetic sculpture that uses careful weighting to balance and move in air currents or through human interaction. Calder's stationary sculptures are called stabiles. His work is known for its humor, chance, and large, colorful forms that redefine the space around them. Calder's illustrious career spanned much of the 20th century; he is the most acclaimed and influential sculptor of our time. Born into a family of celebrated, though more classically trained artists, Calder utilized his innovative genius to profoundly change the course of modern art. He began by developing a new method of sculpting: by bending and twisting wire, he essentially "drew" three-dimensional figures in space. He is renowned for the invention of the mobile, whose suspended, abstract elements move and balance in changing harmony. Calder also devoted himself to making outdoor sculpture on a grand scale from bolted sheet steel. Today, these stately titans grace public plazas in cities throughout the world.
