"Western Ceres, " Art Deco Painting with Goddess of Fertility and Agriculture
About the Item
A color-rich reimagining of the mythological tale of Ceres, the Goddess of fertility and agriculture, this marvelous Art Deco painting shows a modern Ceres holding a pineapple in one hand and an apple in the offer, accompanied by a male figure holding a sheaf of wheat and horses cavorting in the distance. The painting is richly imagined and executed in a palette of teal, burnt sienna, aquamarine and coral. The painter was Adelaide Brooks, who studied at Cornell University in the late 1930s, and then went on to pursue an important and successful career as a painter. Her work seems to reflect the influence of James Owen Mahoney, who painted an important mural at Dallas Fair Park in the mid-1930s, before going to Cornell to teach for decades. The medium is watercolor on paper.
