Still Life Of Peonies Airoldi 1924 oil painting on canvas depicting a composition of flowers, of pink peonies within a vase, signed and dated lower right B. Ajroldi 1924.
A flashy and lush floral arrangement where the peony is the undisputed star. Rendered with quick brushstrokes, the work cleverly contrasts the exuberant colors of the flowers against the dark background with barely noticeable elements, the foreshortening from a window on the left, a mirror with console table on the right; the tortile vase itself and the tabletop, are inanimate elements, appearing in the background, shadowy, as if they should not interfere with the real star of the painting, the peony.
An elegant and ancient flower that embodies love, affection, prosperity and nobility of spirit, the peony is called the thornless rose, a symbol of romantic romance but also an auspicious, good luck symbol.
