Still Life Oil Painting by Ruth Selwitz
About the Item
Both sober and dense lyricism characterize this oil painting by artist Ruth Selwitz, punctuated by a rich palette of colors that converse with each other, resting silently but overlapping, as if small openings of light accentuated the entire work.
The still life painting offers us a perspective on the ceaseless flow of time, echoing as a commentary on life and its transience, and becoming a self-portrait of the spirit's experience rather than a factual representation of two objects. The technique of knife and brush creates a freeze-frame, instilling an almost compulsive urge to be present and witness.
The art of still life and silent life, celebrated in the Dutch Golden Age, has been used throughout history as an emblem of mortality and has ended up being transformed from a minor genre into an important visual tool of the 20th century. Artists have moved from portraying living subjects to inanimate objects to capture the essence of the unstoppable flow of time.
This work by artist Selwitz offers an unique insight into this concept through its powerful expressionist representation of two containers. The work resonates with the story of our lives, of the hourglass that nothing can interrupt or decelerate.
Ruth Selwitz is a well listed artist who was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1933. She studied painting, sculpture, and printmaking at the Carnegie Institute of Technology, the Art Institute of Pittsburgh, and Samuel Rosenberg's Workshop for professional artists. She has shown her work regularly since 1967, first in the Western Pennsylvania area and then in Southern California where she has resided since the mid 1980s. She eventually settled in Malibu. Her paintings are in many collections throughout the country including the Butler Institute of American Art in Youngstown, Ohio, the Springfield Art Museum in Springfield, Missouri, and Westmoreland County Museum of Art in Greensburg, Pennsylvania.
