About the Item
Exquisitely accomplished, this lovely male nude by Paul Goadby Stone is the earliest piece we have ever offered by the artist. Although it has the appearance of a drawing, this work appears to be tempera on prepared paper -- a medium that allowed for great detail and was favored by an array of gay artists such as Paul Cadmus and Jared French in the 1930s and 40s. Stone, Cadmus and George Platt Lynes were friends in the post-War years, enjoying the dunes, beaches and artistic comaradery of Provincetown. Stone was a graduate of Phillips Academy and Harvard University and trained at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Boston. In 1957 he moved to Savannah where he established a reputation for painting of high quality. He died young, so his works are rarely found. This piece is dated and signed.
