"St. George and the Dragon", Fabulous Art Deco Painting by Manne Östlund, 1934
About the Item
One of the most fanciful and dramatic depictions of the St. George and the Dragon story we have ever seen, this painting by Manne Östlund shows a shirtless, modern St. George slaying an orange and black dragon who seems fearful as much as fearsome. The entire scene is alive with writhing, moving elements, including the dragon's tail, which circles helplessly around the saint's figure as he plunges his spear into its mouth. Everything -- including the ground on which they meet -- is stylized and fully Art Deco in character, not surprising since it was painted in 1936. Östlund, a prominent Swedish painter, is best known for his Surrealist and illustration works, and in the 1940s he was commissioned to paint murals in public buildings in Sweden. The painting is watercolor and gouache on paper; it is signed in the lower righthand corner.
