"Redhead, " Striking 1940s Portrait of Young Man by John Menihan
About the Item
This portrait of a young man with vivid red hair, blue eyes and a ruddy complexion was painted by John C. Menihan, one of the most renowned portraitists and watercolorists of his day. Except for short periods as a student at the University of Pennsylvania and in the studio of Bolton Brown Menihan was a lifelong resident of Rochester and started drawing or painting the portraits of upstate New York luminaries in the 1930s. He later become known for his prints and watercolors, and exhibited at the Albright Art Gallery in Buffalo, the Library of Congress and the Memorial Art Gallery in Rochester among many other museums. In the 1960s Menihan also completed murals for the Xerox company and the R. T. French Company (maker of French's Mustard).
