About the Item
Brilliant cerulean blue background with 13 thorned roses behind a woman in a white lace dress painted in 1963 by Pierre Henry. The 13 roses stand for a secret admirer and the color pink symbolizes admiration. The rose has many symbolic meanings of love, passion, the blood of the martyred Christ. The thorns are symbolic of both difficulties or issues in personal relationship when they appear in dreams. Botticelli's Birth of Venus has dozens of roses in the background. The Persian proverb goes "He who wants the rose must respect the thorn" which deals with the quality of life. In perfection there is imperfection and in imperfection there lies the seed of perfection. The craquelure is confined to the skin of the woman. This appears to be an intentional decision by Pierre Henry that he used in several of his canvases and always affects just the skin of the subject. The finely crackled surface suggests the fleeting quality of beauty or a visual reference to antiquity in this symbolically charged work,
