‘Les Peintures des Taxidermistes’ No.6. Art Print Photo by Sinke & Van Tongeren
Located in Haarlem, NL
The third series of photographs by fine Taxidermists Sinke & Van Tongeren After observing and analysing so many 17th century paintings, they were inspired to create a new series of work focused on still life masterpieces. They chose photography as the medium to portray their fine Taxidermy work interpreted through vanitas still lifes. The collection, ‘Les Peintures des Taxidermistes’, comprises eight works. Vanitas still lifes were enormously popular in the 17th century, often inspired by biblical themes and the saying that “All is vanity”. It reminded the viewer of his or her own mortality. For these series of still lifes Sinke & van Tongeren not only created meaningful scenes of taxidermy, they also mined their enormous collection of great finds to gather the most beautiful and unusual antiques to complement each scene. Title of this work; ’RÉUNION D’OISEAUX ÉTRANGERS’ Cabinets of curiosity were of monumental importance in the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries. Assembling them with interesting and rare objects was a competitive hobby amongst the elite, and to collect a great number of mounted species from everywhere in the world was the Holy Grail of the day. For ‘Réunion d’oiseaux étrangers’, we created that Holy Grail again, but this time stocking our cabinet with seemingly live species. This plentiful composition is staged in a cabinet with different boxes holding rare species such as a Toco Toucan, Scarlet ibis, Cock of the Rock...

Oil on Canvas; Hounds Chasing a Stag, Studio of Frans Snyders, Antwerp 1579-1657
By Frans Snyders
Located in London, GB
This powerful hunting scene is closely associated to the work of Antwerp-born seventeenth century painter and draughtsman Frans Snyders, widely considered the “progenitor of Flemish Baroque still-life and animal painting.” Having grown up surrounded by artists, Snyders was initially apprenticed to Pieter Brueghel the Younger (1564-1637/38), scion of a well-established family of painters. Like many of his contemporaries in Northern Europe, to complete his education he then travelled to Italy, staying mainly in Rome and Milan (1608-09). Once back in Flanders, his profile as a skilled young painter – who had refined his craft by studying the masters of Italian art – came to the attention of Sir Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640), in whose Antwerp studio Snyders entered as an assistant in about 1610, and with whom he would go on to collaborate on a number of important commissions for years to come. In 1611, Snyders further strengthened his ties with the local community of painters by marrying Margaretha de Vos, sister to Cornelis and Paul de Vos, two artists with whom he would also regularly collaborate. Thanks to the lessons learned in Italy and in Rubens’ studio, Snyders soon achieved the ability to create rhythmic and dynamic compositions, infused with vibrant colours and powerful naturalistic effects. Centred on the theme of the still life, his market scenes and representations of richly stocked pantries and larders embodied the buoyant and confident spirit of seventeenth-century Antwerp, a trading port with a wealthy merchant class and aristocracy (Still Life with Dead Game, Fruits, and Vegetables in a Market, 1614, The Art Institute of Chicago; Still-Life with Fowl and Game, 1614, Wallraf-Richartz Museum, Cologne). Flowers from all seasons and dead game are portrayed alongside baskets overflowing with fruit, precious gilt vessels and Chinese Wanli porcelain...

Early 17th Century Roman School Praying Madonna Painting Oil on Canvas
Located in Milan, IT
Roman school, late 16th-early 17th century Praying Madonna Oil on canvas, 81 x 69 cm Frame 83 x 95.5 cm A divine whiteness reverberates with vibrant luster on the maphorion of the present Virgin. The palpable iridescence that structures the thin rosaceous garment, woven with the same fresh light, produces a slight rustle when she takes her hands off. The Madonna in fact takes a prayerful pose, opening her palms to underline her fervent ecstatic intention; the white neck is rendered with perishable fullness of pigments, like the hands, perfectly alive, and the very shiny eyes. With fine shrewdness the artist of the present styles the Virgin's hair with thin white ribbons, exacerbating the purity. An evocative light falls gently on the bust, a materialized sign of divine glory. The present can be traced back to the late Mannerist climate that prevailed in the capital after the emanation of the Tridentine council (1545-1563). The late Mannerist licenses that can still be seen there, such as the intense lyricism in the stylistic code adopted by the artist, are innervated in the new basic catechetical intent, which at the end of the century produced a certain figurative rigorism. The present, however, still responds to that extraordinary Roman dynamism that raised the capital to a bulwark for the entire mannerist lesson, matched only by a second artistic center, the Florentine one. The engaging carriage of the Virgin reflects the contemporary examples of Giuseppe Valeriano (1542-1596), a Jesuit painter, returning in the Marriage of the Virgin of the Roman Church of Jesus, as well as in the Madonna of Sorrows in the Recanati Altarpiece, equal ardor. But it is in the Assumption of the Virgin painted in four hands with Scipione Pulzone...
