"Parrots and Trees, " Art Deco Painted Advertising Panel for Poll Parrot Shoes
About the Item
Brilliantly painted by a commercial artist, this large, rare sign panel may have been the most ambitious marketing piece ever created by the Poll-Parrot Shoe Company, one of America’s leading purveyors of children’s shoes from the early 20th century through the 1950s. Paul Parrot founded the company, hence the name, and later sold it to the International Shoe Company. International shoe carried out an ambitious marketing campaign over many years, making good use of colorful and whimsical merchandising initiatives, including neon signs, in-store displays, and sponsorship of a radio program. This sign, hand painted on both sides, not lithographed, is an exotic and wonderful souvenir of midcentury American commerce and illustration. Measures: 6’. The medium is paint on plywood.
