He was trained at the Royal Academy of Arts during 1853 -57 where he won the medal for 'The best drawing from the Life' in both 1854 and 1857. He actively exhibited between 1854 and 1890. He had 30 paintings exhibited at the Royal Academy and specialised in Highland Cattle and general genre paintings. He was also an accomplished portrait painter.
