About the Item
Very captivating, original oil on canvas of a beautiful nude woman with expressive amber eyes and a lion by her side, by famous deceased listed Dutch artist, Leo Jansen (1930-1980). This is a very unusual Leo Jansen painting as I have never seen one with a lion. This painting exudes softness and light and is just exquisite in real life. Painting is signed by the artist on the lower right hand corner and on the reverse you will find Leo Jansen's stamp, signature and original thumbprint, as your guarantee that this painting is authentic. It also has written "Hold for Publication" on the top edge of the canvas. It is also stamped on the backside "MASTER PRINTS FILED WITH: (see photo for locations). It is elegantly custom framed in the original ornate gold frame with an ivory velvet liner.
Many of the rich and famous had sought out Jansen for his portraiture skills and Jansen's sitting fee in the 1960's was $20,000 US dollars. For eighteen years, he was commissioned by Playboy Magazine to paint the playmate of the month. In his first six years, he was the artist chosen to paint 58 of the 72 portraits. His works hung in Hugh Hefner's Playboy corporate headquarters and in the mansion until Hefner's death. He is also famous for his portraiture of The Beatles and The Rolling Stones.
Ranked among the nation's best interpretive artist of nudes, Jansen's canvases hang in the collections of esteemed collectors, notables and celebrities world wide. In the United States, he was in great demand in Los Angeles galleries, but sold primarily through Aaron Brothers. Painting will include the original Certificate of Authentication dated November 15, 1977 from Aaron Brothers Corporation whom originally sold the painting to my client. Due to the certificate's age, it has holes in the paper.
In 1980 at the age of 50 years old, he died from an apparent heart attack.
Canvas measures 24" x 36" unframed. Framed measurement is 31.5" wide x 43" long.
