"Nap Time" by African American Artist Raymond Howell(1931- 2002)
About the Item
Signed and dated lower left: " Raymond Howell '78 "
Inscribed verso with title and date: " Nap Time - 1978
An exceptional example of the work of this highly talented African American painter. Through the use of scattered thin white abstract lines throughout the composition Howell has achieved a delightful swirling sensation to the carousel that enhances this thickly painted and richly colored oil.
The close up photos give a good view of the thick textural effects that Howell loved. ( Howell was a great admirer of Roman and Etruscan fresco technique ). This work from the 1970s when Howell experimented with complex compositions and textural effects is the period that many consider his best.
It appears that the exhausted little girl has indeed fallen asleep amid the cacophony and movement of the swirling carousal!
The carousel depicted in this painting is the 1914 Herschell-Spillman Carousel in Golden Gate Park, San Francisco, CA
Largely self taught, Howell emerged from foster homes and reform school to gain national recognition as one of America's most distinguished African American painters and printmakers.
Born in Oakland, California, in 1931 Howell established the Art Associates West Gallery and Art School in San Francisco. He was also the founding member of Project Dare, an art school for minority children.
Howells' works have been included in numerous exhibitions in New York and San Francisco.
In 1999 Stanford University honored Howell with an important retrospective of Howells' work, " Raymond Howell Paintings - 40 Year Retrospective ", and in 2002 the Oakland Museum held an exhibition of his works.

George Howell Gay was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and educated in Chicago under Paul Brown and Henry Elkins, and in 1889 moved to Bronxville, New York. He worked in all media, but was especially fond of watercolor, which allowed him to capture the transparency of the ocean and the luminous qualities of sunlight and clouds. Gay worked along the Northeastern coast from Rhode Island to Maine, but also painted summer and winter landscapes throughout New England.
