This antique and largest ever, single Delftware tile holds both the art of painting and the art of making glazed ceramic tiles and the amazing result is an absolute joy to own and to look at. This serene, realistic and truly Dutch landscape scene was the typical subject matter of what later became known as the famous 'The Hague School Style'. The painting on this tile was done by one of the great artists that worked for only the best ceramic studios in those days and the original of this painting was created by one of the greats of the 'Haagse School', Louis Apol (1850-1936). It is for that reason that this unique size tile with painting also is signed 'naar L. Apol' which means 'after L. Apol'. We have attributed this one of a kind antique to 'De Porceleyne Fles', but this could also have been made by one of the other two of the top three ceramic studios / manufacturers of that era. Nicolò Barabino (1831–1891) was an Italian academic painter of religious and historical subjects, active in Florence and Genoa.

We very recently purchased a small collection of very rare antique plaques, tiles and vases by some of the best known maker's in the history of Dutch ceramics. This unique, hand-crafted and hand-painted work of art is the first one of that collection and this stunning and rare, single tiles plaque is in its original wooden frame. Because of their contrasting colors, the frame and tile painting go together really well. And these are in fact two works of art, because both the stunningly hand-painted tile and the wooden frame are as good as they come. With the borders of the frame coming as far outward as they do and the Gothic church interior that is drawing your attention deep into the back of the church, they really complement each other. However beautiful the frame is, this antique ofcourse is about the painting and this particular painting is by one of Rozenburg's finest (Wijnand Bastiaan van Horssen) who has perfectly managed to enhance the depth that is already in this composition, thus creating a visual effect that is an absolute joy to look at. By the way, the price that you see on the 'sticker' that the former owner put on the back after he had purchased this piece was put there in the 'old days' when we still had the Dutch guilder. The original painting of the Nieuwe Kerk in the Hague Holland (built in circa 1650) was by J. Bosboom. Besides one small old crack and a few minor imperfections to the frame, this unique and wonderful work of art is in very good condition still and may it grace the home or chapel of a Gothic style enthousiast soon. Mind you, because of their relative fragility very few of these amazing and high value works of art are still around.
Rozenburg of the Hague, where this unique tile painting was created, was always one of the greats in Dutch ceramics and many of their works grace museums all over Europe. Rozenburg’s shareholders included the likes of the marine painter H.W. Mesdag (1831-1915) and the poet and literary critic Carel Vosmaer (1826-1888), and its tile painters numbered rising artists like Willem de Zwart...

19th Century KPM Porcelain Plaque of the Queen of Prussia

This beautiful antique porcelain plaque exhibits the fine quality of craftsmanship and artistry that the prestigious Berlin porcelain manufactory, KPM, is renowned for.
The plaque is delicately painted with the full-length portrait of Duchess Louise of Mecklenburg-Strelitz (1776-1810), Queen of Prussia and wife of King William III (1770-1840). Louise was a popular Queen and was respected for her successful negotiations with Napoleon, before he became Emperor of France. In this plaque, she is depicted descending the steps of the Charlottenburg Palace, Berlin, which was the seat of the Prussian monarchy. She wears a simple robe a l'anglaise, which was fashionable at the time, and looks directly at the viewer in a symbol of power and majesty.
The plaque is signed to the lower right by the artist 'Emile Eckhart', who worked for KPM. It is painted after a famous work by celebrated German artist Gustav Karl Ludwig Richter...
