About the Item
Brilliantly and confidently painted by an important French painter, Augusta de Bourgade, in 1914, this Impressionist painting depicts a group of laborers in the field interacting with the legendary saint, Julian the Hospitaller. Though brought up in wealth and luxury, Julian suffered a series of tragedies that taught him humility and generosity, prompting him to devote the remainder of his life to good works. He is considered the patron saint of hospitality, ferrymen, innkeepers and circus performers. De Bourgade exhibited in Paris at the Salon des Artistes Français starting in 1912 and received a silver medal in 1931. She also exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Indépendants and the Salon des Tuileries. The painting is oil on canvas and is signed and annotated on the reverse. Dimensions include frame.
