About the Item

Signed oil on canvas portrait painting of man with a white beard by Isaac L. Williams (1817-1895). A beautiful rendering with a warm color scheme and ebonized wood frame with gilt accents. Signed on lower left. Isaac L. Williams studied under John R. Smith and John Eagle in Philadelphia. His works were also exhibited in Boston, Baltimore, New York City and Washington. Williams was a member of the Artists' Fund Society in 1860 and later served as president. Until 1844, he mainly painted portraits and then focused primarily on landscapes. He had a studio in Lancaster, PA and then traveled throughout Europe. Most of his life was spent in Philadelphia. Measurement under frame is 7.5"w x 9.5"h.
