Gwendolyn Knight Lawrence (Attributed - American 1913-2005) - 'Untitled' - Post Impressionist winter landscape oil painting on artist's canvas covered board - original pine frame with gilded finish - signed lower right - United States - circa 1950's.
Excellent vintage condition - no loss - no damage - no restoration - minor scuffs / gilding loss to the original frame.
Board Size / Dimensions - 10" (25.4 cm.) Wide x 8" (20.3 cm.) High.
Frame Size / Dimensions - 12 5/8" (32 cm. ) Wide x 10 5/8" (27 cm.) High x 1 1/2" (3.8 cm.) Deep.
Gwendolyn Knight Lawrence was one of the most important and influential African American artists of the 20th century. Known for her moody portraits, landscapes and later on her silkscreen prints and sculpture. Working throughout her career along side her husband Jacob Lawrence, each maintaining a distinctive style, they were each other's best critic. Born in Barbados, she lived in New York and later in Seattle where her husband was offered a teaching position. In 2003, the Tacoma Art Museum held a major retrospective of her work.
